For flight academies training the next crop of Chinese pilots, a flight simulator or training device can make the training process much more efficient and effective. Simulator manufacturer Frasca International is here at ABACE 2012 (Booth H509) to promote simulators and flight-training devices for flight-training organizations, and to add to the more than 20 Frasca devices already in use in China. The next five to 10 years will see rapid growth of aviation in China, said Niu Tao, Frasca’s chief representative for China. Tao is based in Frasca’s office in Beijing.
Frasca International (Booth R71) has announced that the Korea Forest Service has “completed factory acceptance” of its Eurocopter AS350 B2 Ecureuil/AStar helicopter simulator, a U.S. FAA Level-7 flight training device.
The Urbana, Illinois-based training equipment manufacturer has supplied a 120- by 80-deg spherical visual display. The customized database includes eight scenarios covering forestry flying work and night-vision-goggle capability. A “mirror view” channel provides visual scenes in the mirror including water dump from the belly tank and sling bucket operations.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has taken delivery of a Mentor advanced aircraft training device built by Frasca. The trainer will be used in studies of hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, in the university’s Normobaric lab. The Mentor replicates a Cessna 172 cockpit complete with Garmin G1000 avionics and a Truvision visual system.
Urbana, Ill.-based simulator manufacturer Frasca International (Booth No. 1839) has received an order from Purdue University for an Embraer Phenom FAA level-6 flight training device (FTD). It will include the same Garmin Prodigy avionics found in the aircraft and will be used in the university’s professional pilot training program.
Frasca International announced that Bristow Academy of Aberdeen, Scotland, has received dual qualification for its Frasca Sikorsky S-92 full-flight simulator (FFS). The S-92 FFS is the first device approved under JAA with both level B FFS and level 3 FTD approval. A second FFS for the Eurocopter EC225, scheduled for delivery to Bristow in mid-2010, will also be dual certified.
Simulator manufacturer Frasca International’s current projects include two full-flight simulators for Bristow Helicopters (a Sikorsky S-92 and a Eurocopter EC 225) and three level-7 helicopter flight-training devices for FlightSafety International (an AS 350 B2, a Bell 206B/206L and a Bell 407). “The helicopter training sector has become a very important market for Frasca,” said John Frasca, vice president.
The FAA has granted Era Training Center a Part 142 certificate, designating the Lake Charles, La.-based company an approved training center. The first curriculum approved under the new certificate is the EC 135 ATP rotorcraft program.
Lake Charles, La.-based Era Training Center received FAA Part 60 Level 6 qualification for its AS 350B2 flight simulator training device (FSTD). The FSTD, built by Frasca International, offers an exact cockpit replication. Frasca performed flight testing, model development and certification. Era provided the helicopter for flight testing.
Frasca International has received several recent orders for its Mentor advanced aviation training device from Lewis University, Pinnacle Aviation, the University of North Dakota and Florida Institute of Technology. The Institute’s two Mentors feature Avidyne FlightMax Entegra avionics, while the others feature the Garmin G1000 system.
