Mesa Air Group last month reversed its decision to establish a new Cincinnati base and canceled all the flights scheduled to six cities from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport for July 8. Mesa contacted all affected passengers and reaccommodated them on Delta Air Lines or Comair flights.

PIPER PA-31-350, HOLLYWOOD, FLA., JAN. 1, 2002–One passenger died and four others were seriously injured when the pilot was forced to ditch into the Atlantic Ocean after declaring a minimum fuel condition to Miami Center. The flight was en route from North Eleuthera Island to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). As the pilot received a handoff to the FLL tower, he declared an emergency.

Starlite Aviation Catering has opened a facility in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,“just minutes from Hollywood International Airport.” It is the first major expansion for the company, established in 1985 and headquartered in West Palm Beach, Fla. The new location will handle orders through its West Palm Beach call center but will serve half a dozen Fort Lauderdale-area airports, including Kendall-Tamiami, Miami International and Opa Locka.

Federal agents last month arrested six Venezuelan pilots and two ramp workers accused of using false immigration papers to obtain employment in the U.S. Two of the pilots, Pedro Agusti and Luis Garmendia, flew for American Airlines regional subsidiary American Eagle. Another pilot, Pedro Bottome, flew as a Citation X captain for Executive Jet Aviation.

Aero Toy Store, already expanding its interior completion and refurbishment facilities in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., expects to open a 45,000-sq-ft completion and refurbishment center this month at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal. The center will include upholstery and cabinetry shops.

Air Wisconsin last month placed a firm order for six more 50-passenger Bombardier CRJ200s to serve its recently inaugurated code-share relationship with Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran Airways. The transaction, valued at $140 million, represents the partial conversion of a conditional order for 26 of the Canadian jets. It increases the size of the Appleton, Wis.-based airline’s order book to 64 airplanes, 27 of which it has already accepted.

Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport FBO Jetscape Services has secured new investments that will help it launch and develop a chain of FBOs. Jetscape partnered with the Frost Group, an investment firm headquartered in Miami, and is planning to expand the Fort Lauderdale facility and add FBOs in the U.S. and outside the U.S. Jetscape celebrated its fifth anniversary on September 7.

For those flying to the NBAA Convention in Orlando this month, there’s new ownership at one of the FBOs at Orlando Executive Airport (ORL), which hosts the NBAA static display. Sheltair Orlando Executive and Fort Lauderdale Jet Center acquired the general aviation operations and real-estate rights of Executive Air Center at ORL. The acquisition includes more than 200,000 square feet of hangar storage space on the airport.

Jetscape Services said it plans to expand its FBOs at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport in Florida as the first step in a new partnership with a Miami-based private-investment firm.
