DaimlerChrysler Aviation, which has been on the sales block for several months, is believed to be in acquisition negotiations with Edsel Ford II, according to industry sources. A DaimlerChrysler Aviation spokesman declined to comment, but a purchase agreement was described as “near” by a person close to the negotiations. Ford is a member of the board of Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn, Mich.

Published news reports and “numerous rumors” of the Ford flight department’s drastic downsizing are not only premature but false.

Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.) has announced that he and Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.) are working on legislation to provide general aviation parts manufacturers with common-sense protections against lawsuits. “These lawsuits are driving up insurance costs and forcing some manufacturers to stop production on parts certified by the FAA,” Ehlers said.

“There’s a Ford in your future,” proclaimed a 1944 Ford Motor Company advertisement. Fifty-seven years later, DaimlerChrysler found a Ford in its future, and an Edsel as well, when the great-grandson of Henry Ford bought DaimlerChrysler Aviation in 2001. Today, Edsel B. Ford II, 47, still chuckles from time to time at the irony of a Ford owning the company that began in 1964 as Chrysler Air Transportation.
