Snecma plans to unveil a mock-up of its 9,500- to 12,000-pound-thrust Silvercrest engine, as well as divulge more details about the project, at the NBAA Convention in Atlanta next week. The French engine manufacturer also confirmed that it will run a Silvercrest core engine in the fourth quarter.
The Franco-Russian Powerjet SaM146 turbofan engine, which is to power the Sukhoi Superjet 100 regional airliner, is set to fly by the end of this month. The first example of the 14,000- to 17,500-pound-thrust family made its first ground run in July 2006 at Rybinsk in Russia.
Phoenix-based engine and avionics manufacturer Honeywell says its 10,000-pound-thrust engine contender is well under way. Ron Rich, the company’s director of advanced technologies, told AIN that parts for the company’s HTF10000 demonstrator have already been ordered, with the core engine expected to be operational by the end of next year.

Twelve people, including company president Bob Bornhofen, continue to work on the Sport-Jet single-engine jet program based in Colorado Springs, Colo. The first Sport-Jet prototype logged nearly 25 hours before crashing on takeoff on June 22 last year.
Stage III Technologies, which received an STC two years ago this month for its hush kit for Gulfstream IIs and IIIs, plans to have its long-awaited first installation under way in August at Western Jet in Van Nuys, Calif. The kit, which pairs a mixer nozzle with an ejector shroud, yields a 50-percent reduction in noise, according to the company. A thrust reverser that the company says is good for 10,000 cycles is also included.

By the middle of last month, Eclipse Aviation had delivered two airplanes to individual owners and three to air-taxi operator DayJet, which is using its airplanes for pilot training. DayJet plans to certify installation of a stand-alone attitude indicator to make its first airplanes Part 135 compliant until Eclipse receives certification for a third ADAHRS.
A new control surface could reduce induced drag on commercial and business aircraft by up to 14 percent, resulting in fuel savings of more than $400 million per year across the entire U.S. air transport fleet. So claims Utah State University aeronautical engineering professor Warren Phillips, who recently introduced the devices, which he calls “twisterons.”
Sino Swearingen insists that the 2,500-nm-range SJ30-2 will be certified in the third quarter of this year, despite numerous program delays and the crash of S/N 002 in April 2003 (see page 1). “Three test aircraft–Serial Numbers 003, 004 and 005–are now flying seven days a week, and I’m comfortable that we will achieve FAA approval in the third quarter,” a company spokesman told AIN.
