Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has a new program that will allow transition from aviation enthusiast to regional airline pilot in less than a year. The accelerated First Officer Flight Training Program is designed as a 10- to 12-month course which provides 550 hr of total flight experience and advanced simulator flight time, preparing the candidate for a position as a first officer on a domestic regional airline.
With the opening of its new 67,000-sq-ft training center in Orlando, Fla. last October, Pan Am International Flight Academy underscored its intention to further expand into the business of simulator training for business aviation.
With the opening of its new northern Virginia regional airline training center last fall, Pan Am International Flight Academy served notice of its commitment as “a dependable, credible and trustworthy training partner,” said Ralph Leach, director of regional aircraft training.
“We’re going after FlightSafety,” Nick Leontidis, CAE’s executive vice president of civil aviation training and equipment, told AIN. “They may have created the business aviation simulation market, but we believe we have a better product.” He said current customer expectations are “far behind what the commercial airline market has enjoyed for many years in terms of quality of service.”
As of June 13 at least 50,500 foreign nationals in the U.S. for flight training on aircraft with an mtow of 12,500 lb or more were required to suspend their training until their flight schools reapply to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on their behalf.
The FAA has outlined in a new information for operators (InFO 08008) the ICAO English language proficiency requirements, which took effect last month. The ICAO Annex 1 standards require all licensed pilots, as well as flight engineers and flight navigators operating internationally as required crewmembers, to hold an airman certificate with a language proficiency endorsement.
Simulator maker CAE last month announced that Bombardier has awarded the company the simulation development contract for the CRJ900 regional jet and upgrades to four CRJ700 simulators. In addition, Calgary-based airline WestJet has agreed to purchase a Boeing 737-700 flight simulator for installation at the airline’s training facility.

More than two years after the FAA completed its latest evaluation of the relatively high accident rate of the Mitsubishi MU-2 twin turboprop, the agency issued a special FAR (SFAR 108) that makes MU-2 training mandatory for all pilots who want to fly the airplane. The action marks only the second time that the FAA has issued special training regulations for type-specific pilot training in aircraft that don’t require a type rating.
This month marks the two-year anniversary of a pilot union on the property at Cleveland-based fractional provider Flight Options, but there won’t be any celebration since the group has yet to agree on a contract with company management. “We’re investing our resources into getting a contract, and until we achieve this goal we have no reason to celebrate,” noted a spokesman for IBT Local 1108.
