Flight Operations Quality Assurance
Sagem Avionics, part of the Safran group, is at Booth No. 7517 celebrating Slave Lake Helicopters’ selection of Sagem’s Integrated Cockpit Display System (ICDS) for its new Eurocopter AS350 B3e. That machine joins three others in the Slave Lake fleet, an AS350 B2, an EC120 and a Bell 206 B3, all with the Sagem ICDS.
A controversy is raging over the safety practices of India’s airlines following the partial “leak” of a financial audit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The report indicated that poor safety practices may be endemic in the Indian air transport sector.
Oil-and-gas service company PHI has selected Sagem’s AGS flight operations monitoring system for its helicopter fleet. AGS is a ground-based solution that reads and analyzes flight data from aircraft. PHI will be using it as part of its line activity monitoring program (Lamp).
First there was flight operational quality assurance (FOQA), which analyzes flight data to improve pilot performance, and now there is SOQA, which compares simulator-derived data with FOQA data.
Flight Data Systems (Booth No. 7015) is at this year’s NBAA show highlighting its line of ground-support equipment, which interfaces with flight-data recorders to download data files for flight analysis and replay. It makes not only data download equipment but also flight replay software that includes 3-D flight path reconstruction.
If there was any doubt that hundreds of safety-minded aviation professionals were in attendance during the second day of the 56th Annual Corporate Aviation Safety Seminar (Cass) on April 21, that doubt was dispelled when the fire alarm sounded. Quick-thinking flight attendant Amy Nelson, at the podium delivering a presentation on cabin safety, reacted with professional flair. “This is not a drill,” she announced.
Whether for safety, economy or to meet ICAO Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) standards, helicopter operators are showing increased interest in capturing and analyzing flight data. Spidertracks (Booth No. 4854), based in Palmerstown North, New Zealand, offers a global satellite-based system for fleet operators that tracks equipped aircraft in real time and records movements and flight data for later analysis.
HMM Aviation will deploy Sagem's C-FOQA (corporate-flight operational quality assurance) system in the Middle East market under a letter of intent signed at the MEBA show. The Sagem C-FOQA system delivers flight analysis data to airplane and helicopter operators using an Apple iPad application.
While the FAA has filed a “difference” explaining that it does not have a formal safety management system (SMS) rule for aircraft operators, despite ICAO's fast-approaching November 18 deadline, it is in the process of SMS rulemaking.
