Flight management system

November 30, 2010 - 5:22am

Innovative Solutions & Support is almost finished with the development of an integrated flight management system for the Eclipse 500 very light jet. The new FMS will enable coupled LPV approaches, airway route navigation, RNP procedures, parallel offsets, user-defined waypoints and storage for up to 99 flight plans, among other features.

Flight management systems are coming for the Eclipse 500 very light jet and other aircraft, thanks to a new program from Innovative Solutions & Support (IS& S). IS&S (Booth No. 4443) and Eclipse Aerospace (Booth No. 6667) have announced that the avionics manufacturer will provide Eclipse 500 operators with the new AvioNG FMS system.

Several elements of the Next Generation Air Transportation System depend on GPS-based area navigation (RNAV) and required navigation performance (RNP). RNP is essentially RNAV with onboard performance and alerting capability. The ability of the aircraft's own navigation system to monitor its navigation performance and to inform the crew if the required performance is not being met is a defining capability of RNP operations.

Now that we’ve all gotten accustomed to acronyms like Rnav, RNP, LPV and all the others, the next big game changer will be TBO, for trajectory-based operations, sometimes loosely thought of as user-preferred trajectories. Oddly enough, trajectory flying was the fundamental technique used way back by pilots flying the mail in their biplanes and in early passenger operations.

GE Aviation received an award from the FAA as part of the Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (Cleen) program–a joint government-industry initiative to accelerate the development and maturation of aircraft and engine technologies that cut noise, emissions and fuel burn. Under the program, GE and the FAA will share an investment of up to $66 million over a five-year period.
