Encore FBO and private-equity firm GTCR Golder Rauner on November 22 entered a joint definitive agreement to acquire Landmark Aviation’s FBOs from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise Aviation Holdings. The $436 million transaction is “subject to adjustment as provided in the purchase agreement,” according to a disclosure filed publicly by Dubai Aerospace Enterprise Aviation Holdings on December 13.

After working to put down roots in Europe for the best part of a decade, Signature Flight Support now appears to be gathering some real momentum with its recent acquisition of facilities in the UK, Ireland, Belgium and Greece, as well as the opening of a new base at Toulon-Hyéres Airport in the south of France. The European chain now includes some 15 full-service FBOs and an executive aircraft handling presence at almost 20 more airports.

After an absence of nearly 20 years, Shell Aviation announced its return to the U.S. general aviation market last month. “This is not just a trial run,” said Shell Aviation North American vice president Rick Woods. “We plan to be here for the long haul.”
Woods said fuel and other Shell products are now available at 284 branded FBOs across the country following the completion of a reseller agreement with Eastern Aviation Fuels.

Less than a month after acquiring Marathon Flight Services at Kissimmee (Fla.) Gateway Airport and Carolina Air Center in Hilton Head, S.C., Signature Flight Support this week bought Regent Aviation’s FBOs at St. Paul Downtown and Rochester International Airports in Minnesota.

Mercury Air Centers in conjunction with GE Capital Financial and Aviation Logistics (Avlog) introduced last month a MasterCard purchasing program specifically for business aviation operators. The Atlanta-based FBO chain also announced affiliations with Starbucks Coffee and UltraJet air charter.

A 35-acre site for a new FBO at London’s Southend Airport is to be offered to private developers. Regional Airports Ltd, which also owns the UK capital’s Biggin Hill Airport and operates an FBO at the Royal Air Force’s Northolt base, is positioning Southend to serve business aircraft operators wanting to get close to the government-backed Thames Gateway plan to expand London eastwards.

Signature Flight Support has added two more FBOs to its European network. It has opened a new facility at Liege, Belgium, and has acquired the former ATAS base at Greece’s Thessaloniki Airport. The group has also re-opened its Paris Le Bourget FBO after extensive remodeling. The new Liege FBO features separate passenger and crew lounges, customs and immigration facilities, security screening and direct ramp access.

As part of its strategy to increase its FBO holdings, fractional-share operator Avantair has set its sights on buying or building a second FBO, this one at Essex County Airport in Caldwell, N.J. Avantair opened a new FBO at Camarillo Airport in southern California in August and provides FBO services at its company headquarters at St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport in Florida.
