Flybe Finland has agreed to open new routes this summer from Helsinki to the Russian destinations of Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Kazan on behalf of Finnair with Embraer E190s. Service to Nizhny Novgorod International Airport begins on July 25, flights to Samara’s Kurumoch International Airport start on August 7 and operations to Kazan International Airport commence on August 18. Plans call for flights to run three times per week on all three routes.

SR Technics (Stand 1906) has redelivered its 100th aircraft, an Airbus A319 belonging to easyJet, from its Malta MRO facility. The aircraft departed from Malta International Airport last week for London Gatwick after undergoing an immediate layover check (heavy maintenance). SR Technics started operations in Malta in 2010, and easyJet has been the facility’s main customer, along with Finnair, Portugal’s Orbest and France’s Aigle Azur.

GA Telesis and Finnair have entered into an agreement in which GA Telesis has acquired part of Finnair Engine Services and will employ 80 engine-service professionals from Finnair’s existing workforce. The deal comprises the sale of assets and transfer of personnel to GA Telesis Engine Services (Gates). Gates has simultaneously entered into a long-term lease of all of the engine maintenance and test cell facilities from Finnair.

Russia’s action against Finland’s national carrier, Finnair, significantly raises the stakes in the standoff between the European Union (EU) and opponents of its emissions trading scheme (ETS). The European Commission (EC) protested the move, saying that Russia is now in breach of its obligations as a new member of the World Trade Organization.

Opponents of the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS) were heartened last month when the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) announced it expects to have a draft proposal on how to mitigate carbon dioxide from aircraft by next March.

ICAO Secretary-General Raymond Benjamin said on June 18 that the governing council of the United Nations body that oversees civil aviation worldwide would discuss “market-based measures” to reduce emissions the following week.

Russia has raised the stakes in the increasingly bitter dispute over the European Union’s imposition of its controversial emissions trading scheme (ETS) by refusing to grant new overflight rights to Finnair and abandoning a commitment to allowing new rights to be issued free of charge.

Ameco will be supporting Finnair A330s at its Chongqing outstation.

Ameco (Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Corp) Beijing has added a third international customer to its Chongqing outstation. Earlier this month the MRO provider entered into a contract with Finnair to support the airline’s four-times-weekly A330 flight to the airport. Ameco Beijing’s Chongqing facility also supports Qatar Airways and TNT.

Estonian Air has chosen Embraer’s line of E-Jets to revamp its entire fleet of narrow-body and regional jets, Embraer announced in late February. The national flag carrier of Estonia and the Brazilian manufacturer have signed a contract for the purchase of three E175s and one E190. Estonian Air also plans to take eight more Embraer aircraft–four E170s and four E190s–under a combination of lease agreements with third parties and leasing companies. At press time the direct purchase from Embraer remained subject to the approval of Estonian Air’s Supervisory Council.

The effort by UK low-fare regional Flybe and Finnair to break through European structural barriers to consolidation took the form of an agreement last month between the airlines to jointly acquire Finnish Commuter Airlines (FCA), a Finnish regional carrier owned by Finncomm Oy. The companies plan to create a new joint venture called Flybe Nordic AB, 60 percent owned by Flybe and 40 percent by Finnair.
