Rockwell Collins is enhancing and expanding its cockpit and cabin systems and introducing a new enhanced-vision system (EVS) at this year’s NBAA show.
On Friday, Rockwell Collins unveiled its new EVS-3000 enhanced vision system, which includes a multi-spectral EVS sensor that “significantly improves detection of outside terrain, hazards and obstacles in low-visibility conditions caused by weather phenomena such as fog.” The EVS-3000 also brings the industry-first ability to fully detect LED lighting, which is increasingly being used by airports as a runway lighting solution. It does not require a built-in cooling system, reducing weight.
Gulfstream Aerospace’s enhanced vision system (EVS) II and head-up display (HUD) II for the G280 are now FAA certified, the company announced late last week. Combined, the systems–which are integrated with the G280’s Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion-based PlaneView280 avionics–allow pilots to see terrain, runways, taxiways and possible obstructions in low-visibility conditions.
The Astronics Max-Viz 600 infrared enhanced vision system is now covered under a Cessna service bulletin for retrofit installation in late-model Cessna single-engine airplanes. The bulletin includes Skyhawks, Skylanes and Stationairs that have already been factory-provisioned for the FAA- and EASA-approved upgrade. Cessna authorized service centers can install the Max-Viz 600 EVS in about eight hours.
Eclipse Aerospace’s new 550 very light jet will feature an enhanced vision system (EVS) sensor made by Lexavia. The Lexavia LFS6000 infrared sensor has a 640- by 480-sensor element and 4X zoom. EVS imagery will be displayed on the Eclipse 550’s MFD, which is part of the jet’s Innovative Solutions & Support Avio/IFMS flight deck. The EVS sensor is mounted in a low-profile housing that projects 1.42 inches above the fuselage nose surface.
Eclipse Aerospace took an important and large step toward resuming new production of its light twinjet yesterday. The company placed a production order Innovative Solutions & Support (Booth No. 4331) for the initial 50 of 300 shipsets ordered of the Eclipse 550 Avio integrated flight management system (IFMS), which includes dual FMS, autothrottles, synthetic vision, integrated Taws and enhanced vision system (EVS). The IS&S suite also features electronic circuit breakers, radios, transponders and radar.

Astronics is forging ahead after purchasing enhanced vision system (EVS) maker Max-Viz in early August and recently signed an installation agreement with Hawker Beechcraft. Under the agreement, Hawker Beechcraft Global Customer Support will have the opportunity to install Max-Viz infrared EVS in any King Air equipped with an MFD that can display video images, according to Astronics president and CEO Peter Gundermann.
Hawker Beechcraft Global Customer Support and Max-Viz expect the FAA to issue the STC for installation of the Max-Viz EVS-1500 enhanced vision system for the Hawker 750 through 900 this month. Hawker Beechcraft is also offering the EVS-1500 for buyers of new Hawker 900XPs. Installations for the Hawker 750 through 900 series will be done at Hawker Beechcraft Services factory-owned service centers. In the Hawker jets, EVS-1500 delivers infrared imaging to Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 MFDs as well as video-capable EFBs and, using a video distribution amplifier, passenger monitors.
Max-Viz said an STC approval for its EVS-1500 enhanced vision system in Hawker business jets is close at hand. According to the avionics company, Hawker Beechcraft Global Customer Support’s program for installation of the EVS-1500 on Hawker 750s, 800s, 850s and 900s will be STC’d by next month. Installations through Hawker Beechcraft Services’ factory-owned service centers will require three to four days of downtime, Max-Viz told AIN. The EVS-1500 will also be a factory option on new 900XPs.
