Faced with the likelihood of the number of flights in Europe doubling to 17 million by 2020, the European Commission launched the ambitious Single European Sky (SES) ATM implementation program– now dubbed Sesar, replacing the former Sesame moniker.

Last November saw the signature in Brussels of a contract covering the definition phase of the single European sky (SES) implementation program (Sesar, formerly known as Sesame).
A report issued last month by Eurocontrol projects that over the next 10 years Europe’s fleet of turbine business aircraft will grow by about 4 percent annually, from some 2,000 today to approximately 3,000 by 2015. The report says that last year business aircraft made up nearly 7 percent of the 9.2 million flights in Europe.
While the European Commission has defined “excellent” governance principles for better regulation, it has not followed its own rules, ERA director general Mike Ambrose told AIN ahead of this month’s ERA general assembly in Barcelona.
Eurocontrol, the European international body that coordinates upper-airspace IFR traffic, recently published a study about business aviation in its 31-nation territory– the European Union, Switzerland, Norway and Eastern Europe. The organization has produced studies on scheduled and non-scheduled air traffic in the past, with the purpose of anticipating growth and preparing infrastructure.
