It is ironic that a Scottish entrepreneur who failed to make a success of two innovative aviation projects has had more success in what many would consider the much riskier world of land-speed record breaking.

A qualified pilot, Richard Noble created ARV Aviation in 1983 to design and build an all-British light aircraft: the Super2, which was powered by a Hewland AE75 three-cylinder two-stroke engine, but only 35 were made before production ceased.

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) selected the General Electric F414 turbofan engine to power the second batch of indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA), also known as the Tejas. GE’s bid was lower than that of rival contender Eurojet for supply of the EJ200, the DRDO said. The American company previously supplied 41 F404 engines to power the development and initial production LCA Mk Is.

The Eurojet EJ200 that powers the Eurofighter achieved a milestone earlier this month when the first engine to be completed to the full operational clearance standard surpassed 1,000 on-wing hours. Engine number EN1030 was built by Rolls-Royce at Filton and was delivered to the UK Royal Air Force in 2003. It has subsequently flown in two Typhoon aircraft stationed at RAF Coningsby without the need for any unscheduled maintenance.

The Eurofighter consortium achieved a major milestone on the first of the month with the first flight of a Typhoon with Tranche 2 avionics. BAE Systems pilot Mark Bowman took aloft Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA) 6 from the company’s Warton plant.
