Eurocopter is flight-testing low-noise approach, takeoff and cruise flight procedures with an EC 135 light twin. The trials are also serving to develop a software program for noise footprint prediction. Similar tests were conducted with an EC 130 last year.

Abu Dhabi-based operator Falcon Aviation Services (FAS) has inked the first firm order for the “l’Hélicoptère par Hermès” version of the Eurocopter EC 135 light twin. The ?5.8 million ($9 million) helicopter features an exclusive cabin layout with the signature French firm’s canvas used to cover surfaces from floor to ceiling.

Eurocopter announced here yesterday that Abu Dhabi-based operator Falcon Aviation Services (FAS) has signed the first firm order for the EC 135 light twin in its “l’Hélicoptère par Hermès” luxury version. Eurocopter expects to sell at least six examples this year of the ?5.8 million ($9 million) helicopter, which was introduced at the NBAA show in September last year.

A Eurocopter EC 135 T2+ (N135UW) operated by Air Methods for the University of Wisconsin crashed Saturday night shortly after taking off VFR from La Crosse (Wis.) Municipal Airport (LSE). The pilot and two-man medical crew, the only occupants, were killed. An NTSB spokesman said the helicopter hit a ridgeline four miles southeast of LSE, with debris scattered over a tenth of a mile and up to 600 feet below the main wreckage.

The biggest engine deal of Farnborough 2002 was undoubtedly FedEx’s selection of the Engine Alliance’s GP7200 engines to power its 10 A380 cargo megaliners. Though the value of the contract was not disclosed, it gives the Pratt & Whitney/General Electric joint venture parity in the A380 powerplant race with its Rolls-Royce rival.

Eurocopter AS 355/EC 130, New York, March 22, 2008–A Liberty Helicopter Eurocopter AS 355 struck an idling Liberty Eurocopter EC 130 on takeoff from the West 30th Street Heliport. The AS 355’s skid hit the main rotor of the stationary EC 130. Damage was not substantial enough to be classified an accident and no injuries were reported for the AS 355 pilot and four passengers or the EC 130 pilot and five passengers.

Eurocopter EC 135P2, Oxon Hill, Md., Jan. 10, 2005–The NTSB blamed the pilot’s failure to identify and arrest the descent of the LifeNet helicopter, which resulted in controlled flight into terrain. Contributing factors were the dark night conditions, limited outside visual references and the lack of an operable radar altimeter.

Eurocopter EC 135P1, Washington, D.C., May 30, 2006–The NTSB determined the probable cause of the EMS helicopter crash to be the operator’s inadequate training program and the pilot’s failure to maintain control following his inadvertent disabling of the full authority digital engine control (Fadec) system.

Amid feverish speculation that the 2005 show might be rattling around the mighty Excel exhibition centre in London’s docklands, this year’s Helitech, held in late September, rolled back its sleeves and got on with the job in hand. During a week of beautiful late-summer weather, the biennial event attracted more than 6,500 trade visitors and some 300 helicopters to Duxford Airfield.
