As the industry sees ­glimmers of hope that the downturn is finally ending, engine and avionics manufacturer Honeywell anticipates at least one more down year in 2011 before the start of a rebound cycle.

While the industry at large has suffered a severe downturn since 2008, very light jets (VLJs) have enjoyed a “secret boom,” according to German aviation consultancy Wingx Advance. The company based its conclusion on Eurocontrol data showing that over the past six months the number of VLJ flight movements in Europe grew by 100 percent compared with the same period a year earlier.

The former Mac Dan Aviation FBO at Essex County Airport in Caldwell, N.J., which closed on September 30, has been reopened under the new name Air Bound Aviation. Andy Ferguson, a long-time Essex County aircraft broker, hangar lessor and salesman for Pilatus PC-12 dealer Pro Star Aviation, took over the lease that used to be held by Mac Dan Aviation and reopened the FBO on December 1.

The company stopped providing fuel services and sold all of its equipment, a source told AIN. Mac Dan operated the FBO, as well as an aircraft sales division, charter operation and flight school.

Mac Dan Aviation, one of two FBOs at Essex County Airport in northern New Jersey, closed its doors last Wednesday, according to a security guard tending the now-empty facility. The company apparently had stopped providing fuel services earlier last month and sold all of its equipment, according to information provided to AIN. Mac Dan operated the FBO, as well as an aircraft sales division, charter operation and flight school.

Jet Aviation has appointed Jakob Straub vice president and general manager of the company’s Zurich maintenance and FBO operations, succeeding interim general manager Paul Kempf. He joins the company from SR Technics Ireland in Dublin, where he was senior vice president and COO.
