Most activity in business jet engine research and development is taking place for business aircraft at the top end of the size range. Snecma (Booth 5515) is developing the Silvercrest for the Dassault Falcon 5X, while Pratt & Whitney Canada (Booth 3834) has readied a new variant of the PW307 for the newly revealed Falcon 8X. The Québec-based manufacturer is also running the PW800, a demonstrator in the 10,000- to 20,000-lb-thrust range. GE (Booth 5551) is working on its Passport engine for Bombardier’s Global 7000 and 8000.

Southeast Turbines has completed renovating its 10,000-sq-ft facility at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. The FAA-certified repair station specializes in the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A, PT6T and JT15D. Southeast Turbines’ capabilities include on-wing hot-section inspections, compressor-turbine disk reblade, true and balance, small exit duct rework to include “zero grind” hot-section installations, unscheduled power section repairs, fuel nozzle cleaning/recertification and bleed valve overhaul.

General Electric is stepping up studies to provide a new engine for Boeing’s planned 777X. GE90 program manager Bill Millhaem has confirmed that the proposed GE9X turbofan will deliver 10 percent greater fuel efficiency than existing engines in the family.

The U.S. engine maker expects to achieve a first run of the high-pressure compressor rig early in 2013. The first test of the full core should be achieved by 2015.

Price Induction is about to embark on European certification of its DGen 380 general aviation turbofan, the Tarnos, the France-based turbine-engine manufacturer said this week at the Paris Air Show. An example of the engine, claimed to be the smallest such turbofan available, is on exhibit at the airshow, which runs through Sunday.

GE Aviation announced this week at EBACE that its TechX engine, which Bombardier selected for its Global 7000 and Global 8000, has been rebranded as “Passport.” The first model in what Cincinnati, Ohio-based GE hopes will be a series of turbofans in the 10,000- to 20,000-pound-thrust class will produce up to 16,500 pounds of thrust for the new Global jets.

Pratt & Whitney today filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court in Connecticut against Rolls-Royce, claiming that UK-based engine maker misled the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office to obtain a patent related to swept fan blades.

Start-up engine manufacturer Price Induction is about to begin endurance testing on its 575-pound-thrust Dgen 380 turbofan by the end of this month. A new architecture on the core engine was validated in December for better performance after 50 hours of testing, a spokesperson from the France-based company told AIN. The A6 standard of the full engine, which incorporates the core changes, has run about 20 hours since.

German-based engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines is here at the Paris Air Show (Hall 2 Stand AB 151) exhibiting a cutaway mockup of a geared turbofan. This is the basic concept for its Claire (clean air engine) technology program, whose aim is to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 30 percent by 2035. It is making its first step under the umbrella of the European Commission’s Clean Sky joint technology initiative.

UK-based Rolls-Royce and GKN Aerospace have established a joint venture to study the use of composite materials in fan blades. The engine manufacturer and the aerostructure specialist are investing, on a 51-49 basis, £11 million ($22 million) in
a research and development program. For Rolls-Royce, this could signal a major shift from a well established design choice.

Pratt & Whitney Canada announced last year at NBAA 2000 that it had embarked on development of a new line of turboprop, turboshaft and turbofan engines, the PW600 series, spanning a power range from 1,000- to 3,000-lb thrust (500- to 2,000-shp), and a demonstration program for geared turbofan engine technology.
