Global aviation fuel supplier Air BP is on hand at LABACE (Booth 1008) to demonstrate its new containerized refueling system (CRS). Known as “the Eagle,” the system is a portable, self-contained unit that can be easily transported by road, rail or water to remote areas.
Air BP recently conducted its first off-airport-site aircraft refueling operation in the Middle East. In June, an Air BP operations team refueled HeliDubai’s Agusta 109e at the HeliDubai Festival City helipad, which was opened in September. Following the successful fueling, complete control of the fueling operations was handed over to HeliDubai’s operational team as the helicopter operator became the first Air BP customer in the Middle East to sign up for the fuel supplier’s Omega (operations manual for external general aviation) support and training program.
The Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB) has concluded in a draft report that extreme cold most likely caused a lithium-ion battery on an All Nippon Airways Boeing 787 to malfunction in January 2013, The Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported. The board plans to release a final report in September or later.
American Champion Aircraft (ACA) announced on Wednesday at AirVenture that it would offer a diesel-powered version of its Denali Scout two-seat utility model, likely by 2016. The aircraft is currently powered by a 210-hp Lycoming IO-390.
Solar-powered aircraft could offer a low-cost way to train future pilots, if the partners developing the Sun Flyer succeed in their ambitious plans. A technology demonstrator–a PC-Aero Elektra One–for the Sun Flyer solar-powered airplane made its first flight earlier this month in Munich, Germany, and can be seen at EAA AirVenture 2014 at the Redbird Flight Simulations display (Booth 320). While the Elektra One technology demonstrator didn’t fly with solar panels, the panels will be installed on the Elektra that is on display at AirVenture.
Bombardier Aerospace recently completed a non-temperature-restricted bleedless auxiliary power unit starting test, following a 10-hour cold soak at -40 degrees F and using a starter/generation system and lithium-ion battery system. The Safran Microturbo e-APU system included a starter generator and power electronics from Thales and a Saft Li-ion battery system. The prototype equipment was designed for business jets, Bombardier said. The tests were conducted at the Safran Turbomeca cold-chamber facility in Pau, France.
Industrial bioscience company Amyris and energy giant Total have begun to market a so-called drop in jet fuel containing a 10-percent mix of renewable farnesane under a newly revised ASTM standard, the companies announced in June. Amyris and Total have worked closely on approval of the new fuel with Boeing, which, according to the airframer’s managing director of environmental strategy and integration, Julie Felgar, wants to see biofuel account for a 1-percent share of the total jet fuel supply within 10 years.
Even as aircraft engine makers continue their very focused efforts to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, the use of biofuel alternatives to jet-A is an increasingly important facet of the campaign to make air transport more environmentally sustainable. Plans for making biofuels a more mainstream option for operators now account for around half of all the objectives set by the Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe (Acare).
