Greenpoint Technologies, an executive cabin completions specialist for Boeing Business Jets, has delivered its fourth Aeroloft kit.

The Aeroloft’s design and manufacturing process supports third-party installations. A Greenpoint team installed the first three Aerolofts to be delivered with assistance of Boeing its Wichita facility. This is the first Aeroloft to be installed by the customer at the customer’s own facility. Greenpoint supports the customer during the installation and certification phase.

Clearwater, Fla.-based fractional provider Avantair restarted operations on November 9, following a nearly three-week voluntary grounding of its approximately 60 Piaggio Avantis. The voluntary grounding was precipitated by a July 28 incident in which an Avantair-operated Avanti shed an elevator in flight and flew two subsequent legs before the crew noticed that the control surface was missing. “The Piaggio continued to fly normally for a few reasons, including its dual elevators, forward canards and high wings,” according to Avantair CEO Steve Santo.

A recent Aviation Maintenance Alerts published by the FAA highlights a problem that should never, ever come up in aerospace: a design that allows mechanics to install something opposite the way intended. In this case, according to AC 43-16A No. 407, mechanics installed the elevators on a Piaggio P.180 Avanti upside down. After doing so, the mechanics were even able to rig the elevators according to the aircraft maintenance manual (AMM) instructions. Although installed upside down, the twin-turboprop was able to fly, and it did. According to the FAA’s Alerts, “During flight, this reversed elevator installation greatly influenced elevator trim authority—additionally causing the airplane yoke to be in a noticeably different longitudinal position.” The Alerts goes on to note that Piaggio has added a note to the AMM, warning mechanics about this potential problem. The FAA added, “A very simple way to ensure the correct elevator is installed on the proper side is to verify the location of the static wicks—they must be on the upper surface of the elevator.”

The FAA has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking for an Airworthiness Directive for certain Embraer Phenom 300s. It is based on an unsafe condition as a result of an inadequate number of drain holes in the primary control surfaces (rudder, elevators and ailerons), which may allow water to accumulate in the control surfaces.

Greenpoint Technologies’ design team has released its concept for a ground-to-main deck elevator for executive versions of the Boeing 747-8.

The elevator, according to the Kirkland, Wash.-based completion center, “is capable of transporting passengers from the ground to the main deck, providing an elegant and secure method to board the aircraft.”

The flight department of Greek-based construction company Consolidated Contractors International was faced with a challenge when the group’s 82-year-old chairman asked them to fit his Bombardier Challenger 601-3R with a wheelchair lift. Their boss’ arthritic knees made boarding the aircraft painful, and he was sick of the indignity of having to have the crew lift him up the steps.
