Boeing announced three significant new defense partnerships here yesterday, although one partner was not identified. The American group signed a memorandum of understanding with Elbit Systems to promote the Hermes 450 and 900 UAVs in the U.S.

Here at the Farnborough International airshow Israeli electronics house Elbit Systems (Hall 1 Stand C14) is highlighting two new systems that expand the company’s portfolio in the field of aircraft protection. J-Music is a new DIRCM [directed infrared countermeasures] system intended for large aircraft, while the All-in-Small is a compact unified protection suite that has both fixed- and rotary-wing applications.

F-18 large display

Boeing has selected Elbit Systems to supply the high-resolution large area display (LAD) for future export versions of the F-15 Eagle and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The 11- by 19-inch LAD replaces several multifunction displays. It forms part of the F-15 Silent Eagle proposal to Korea, and the Super Hornet proposal for Brazil’s long-running fighter contest.

The Hermes 450 UAV designed by Israel’s Elbit Systems has been acquired as a surveillance platform by at least 10 countries, including Singapore, but only the UK has requested major changes.

Hermes 900

A new UAV design on display here is Elbit’s Hermes 900, the bigger cousin of the popular Hermes 450. The family genes make the Hermes 900 particularly attractive to operators of the Hermes 450­–a roster that includes Singapore–as it employs the same ground control stations and maintenance processes.

Elbit Systems of America’s Kollsman Commercial Aviation announced at NBAA 2011 in Las Vegas that flight testing of its second-generation, enhanced-vision system, EVS II, is in progress on a Boeing 777 and that certification flight test of a new Kollsman head-up display (HUD) for the Bombardier Challenger 604 is about to commence.

Elbit Systems of America’s Kollsman Commercial Aviation unit is celebrating delivery of its 1,000th infrared enhanced vision system (EVS), which went to Gulfstream Aerospace. Pres Henne, Gulfstream senior v-p for engineering and test programs, accepted a plaque commemorating the event from Roy Gentry, Kollsman Commercial Aviation vice president.

As the culmination of a jointly funded cooperation program between Italian electronics house Elettronica and the Elop business of Elbit Systems, the Israeli company yesterday announced a $15 million contract to supply directional infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) systems for installation on Italian aerial platforms, including the Lockheed Martin C-130J and Alenia C-27J transports, and AgustaWestland AW101 helicopters.
