Assembly work on the Mitsubishi Regional Jet officially began today with a ceremonial rivet-driving celebration at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Tobishima plant, MHI and Mitsubishi Aircraft jointly announced today. MHI riveters began work on the frame structure of an MRJ90, driving rivets into an area surrounding the emergency escape hatch in the roof of the aircraft’s cockpit.

Honda Aircraft announced this week that its first production-conforming HondaJet achieved the model’s planned maximum speed during flight testing. The light twinjet reached 425 ktas at 30,000 feet and a maximum Mach of 0.72 above 30,000 feet during a March 11 flight from the company’s Greensboro, N.C. headquarters.

The Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) project officially entered its manufacturing phase on September 30, when Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Mitsubishi Aircraft held a ceremony in Nagoya, Japan, to mark the start of production of the first MRJ. During the event, MHI technicians began cutting aluminum for a frame component associated with the airplane’s horizontal stabilizer.

Honda Aircraft in late July said that power was switched on for the first time in its first conforming flight-test HondaJet light jet, while the fuselage and wing assemblies were mated for the first static test aircraft.

The time for refinements to the Mitsubishi MRJ has nearly passed, as Mitsubishi Aircraft expects to freeze the regional jet’s design within the next two months. The company has frozen all the interfaces between the various systems and the structural components, both in the 88-seat MRJ90, scheduled for Japanese certification in late 2013, and the 76-seat MRJ70, which would likely gain its certification roughly a year later.

The HondaJet program has once again been delayed. Honda Aircraft began notifying buyers last month that delivery of the first HA-420 HondaJet is now planned for the third quarter of 2012. “Regrettably we’ve experienced delays in some components,” a HondaJet spokesman told AIN. He declined to identify the suppliers involved in the latest setback for the program.

Honda Aircraft this week began notifying HA-420 HondaJet buyers that the program has again been delayed. Delivery of the first HondaJet is now planned for the third quarter of 2012, a spokesman told AIN today at EBACE. “Regrettably we’ve experienced delays in some components,” he said, although he declined to identify the suppliers involved. HondaJet customers are taking the news of the latest delay well, the spokesman said.

The first production conforming HondaJet is now scheduled to fly in the middle of this year, at a date yet to be determined, according to a Honda Aircraft spokesman. The prototype HondaJet has been flying since Dec. 3, 2003, and has met projected performance targets during more than 500 hours of testing by flying at a top speed of 420 knots and altitude of 43,000 feet.
