Aspen Avionics is extending its reach further into the general aviation market with a new VFR version of its primary flight display (PFD) glass panel retrofit product. Retailing for $4,995 (plus installation), the VFR 1000 PFD offers owners of older aircraft a way to add a single glass panel that replaces the traditional six-pack instruments, then later add additional capabilities, which are available as software upgrades. “This is tailored for the VFR pilot,” said John Uczekaj, Aspen president and CEO.

The M611 camera, which contains the company’s ISIE (intevac silicon imaging engine) 11 sensor for low light level detection, replaces the existing camera in the Apache’s nose-mounted pilot night vision sensor (PNVS). The ISIE 11 sensor is also being integrated in the F-35 helmet-mounted display system (HMDS).
Eurofighter has signed a new development contract with the four European partner nations for the Typhoon. The Evolution Package 2 (EP2) comprises various improvements to the combat jet’s avionics. Elbit Systems of America debuted an upgraded Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS) II at this year’s Paris Air Show (Hall 3 Stand E111).
The JHMCS II provides a new optical-inertial tracker and replaces the JHMCS subsystems with a lightweight aircraft interface unit. The system is designed as a “low-cost, low-integration” helmet-mounted display for both new aircraft installation, as the JHMCS II, and as an upgrade for already equipped aircraft, the Digital JHMCS.
Plenty of new and unique equipment is on display in and outside the Elbit Systems pavilion (Chalet A198), according to the Israeli company’s new president and CEO Butzi Machlis. This includes the SPS-65-V5 self-protection system for the Hermes 900 and other UAVs; a wide-area full motion video sensor for the same drone; unattended ground sensors; and a ‘mini’ version for helicopters of Music, the Elbit DIRCM system that protects airliners from ground-launched missiles.
