In late October Air Seychelles announced its purchase of three 19-seat Viking Air DHC-6 Twin Otter Series 400s as part of a plan to renew its domestic fleet for services between Mahé and Praslin, as well as other islands in the archipelago, including Bird, Denis and Frégate. The airline expects to take all three turboprops by mid-2015 but holds an option for earlier delivery if aircraft become available. It now operates one Viking Twin Otter Series 400 and three aging de Havilland Canada-built Series 300s, all of which it plans to replace with the newly ordered airplanes.

The NTSB is investigating what caused the fatal crash of a de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter floatplane shortly after takeoff on Sunday from Soldotna Airport in Alaska. Parts of the wreckage of the Rediske Air aircraft, including the engine and propeller, have been recovered, and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The accident, Alaska’s worst in more than a decade, killed all 10 people on board, including the pilot/air-taxi company co-owner.
Not all the big order announcements at this year’s Paris Air Show came from the big OEMs, as Viking Air illustrated by announcing the two significant sales: Four Twin Otter Series 400s to Aerostar Leasing; and an additional seven to Russia’s Vityaz Avia.
A de Havilland Canada DHC-6-300 Twin Otter crashed on takeoff from Sam Neua Airport (VLSN) in Laos on April 17. Five of 16 people aboard the aircraft sustained injuries and the aircraft was destroyed. The aircraft failed to clear trees at the end of the airport’s 3,700-foot runway and crashed in a nearby canal, shearing off the left wing.
Lagos-based Evergreen Apple Nigeria (EAN) has received approved maintenance organization (AMO) certification from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. The MRO has the equipment in place to maintain Saft batteries and aircraft wheels across a range of aircraft including the Dornier 328 and Bombardier Learjet, Challenger and Global Express.
When the Singapore Airshow was last held two years ago, Canadian airframer Viking Air had yet to receive certification for its Twin Otter 400, the twin-engine turboprop formerly produced by de Havilland Canada (DHC) and a continuation of the series that ceased production in 1988. Today the British Columbia-based manufacturer will hand over its ninth production model to Papua New Guinea-based OK Tedi Mining at a ceremony at its chalet (39).
Viking Air of Victoria, British Columbia, will use the Avtrak GlobalNet platform to support its factory maintenance tracking program–Viking MX. According to Rob Mauracher, v-p of business development and MRO general manager for Viking, the Viking MX system will allow operators to plan, track and schedule maintenance activities, maintain regulatory compliance and work closely with the OEM in monitoring overall aircraft systems reliability.
Canada’s Viking Air today at the Farnborough airshow handed over its first new Twin Otter 400 to launch customer Zimex Aviation. The Swiss operator plans to send the turboprop twin to North Africa to work in support of contracts for the oil and gas industry. The updated version of the classic workhorse made its first flight in February and completed the Canadian and European certification process last month. U.S.
