Pratt & Whitney Canada (Hall 4, F218) PT6As will power the first civil aircraft certified on the African continent, the company announced here in Paris. Developed by South Africa’s Aerosud, the two-seat airplane will serve in reconnaissance and surveillance roles.

Reports from Ecuador state that the nation is close to acquiring nine Atlas Cheetah C fighters from South Africa. The South African Air Force retired nearly 30 of the much-modified Mirage IIIs in 2008 to free up funds for the introduction of the Gripen, and the aircraft were made available for export through Denel and Armscor.

Libya plans to buy 14 Dassault Rafale fighters as part of an arms package agreed by French President Nicholas Sarkozy and Libyan leader Muammar Ghadaffi during a state visit to Paris this month. The package, which is worth $5.8 billion, also includes 35 Eurocopter helicopters and the return-to-service and upgrade of Libya’s Mirage F1 fighter fleet.
