In what might prove the biggest cross-border airline merger ever between two Latin American airlines, Chile’s LAN and Brazil’s TAM plan to form the world’s 10th largest carrier (in terms of passenger numbers) under a non-binding memorandum of understanding signed August 13.

Panama’s Copa Airlines has placed an estimated $1 billion firm order for 13 Boeing 737-800s, in a deal consisting of a mixture of option conversions and new sales, the airline announced today. The contract raises the total number of Boeing 737NGs Copa has ordered to 27 and increases Boeing’s net order count for the year from four airplanes to 17.

Engine maker General Electric may have inadvertently exposed the identity of the Embraer 190 program’s second customer when it told an audience gathered at an ERA press conference that Panama’s Copa Airlines will acquire at least twenty 18,500-pound-thrust CF34-10Es–variants specifically developed to power the 98-seat regional jet.

Colombian domestic airline AeroRepublica has placed a firm order for five 108-seat Embraer 190s and options on another 20 of the latest member of Embraer’s E-Jet line. A wholly owned subsidiary of Panama’s Copa Holdings, AeroRepublica plans to start taking deliveries in November and immediately press the airplanes into service on existing domestic routes.
