West Star Aviation of East Alton, Ill. is expecting to obtain an FAA supplemental type certificate (STC) in the first quarter of 2014 for its RVSM solution for the Cessna Conquest II. The solution includes a dual-side Garmin G600 avionics display system and S-Tec 2100 digital autopilot.
MD Helicopters unveiled at Heli-Expo yesterday its Next Generation Cockpit for the MD Explorer, featuring an integrated, single-pilot IFR-capable flight deck from Universal Avionics.
“It’s a huge upgrade to the aircraft–exactly what customers are asking us for,” said Lynn Tilton, CEO and principal of Patriarch Partners, which owns MD Helicopters. “This is the beginning of great things for the [MD Explorer] 902 on its 20th anniversary.”
Three de Havilland Canada DHC-6-300 Twin Otters operated by Tac Air out of Coronado, Calif., are getting a new outlook on life thanks to Pacific Coast Avionics. The Aurora, Ore. company has a contract to design and install custom panels and a new avionics system. The aircraft are used for civilian and military jump training.
New flight plan requirements developed for ICAO compatibility with digital air traffic management systems around the world take effect tomorrow at 8 p.m. EST. “The amendments to flight plan content go to the very core of flight-plan processing,” according to Eurocontrol. The basic flight plan form and the field composition within the flight-plan message remain unchanged, but the content of some fields will change. A new Eurocontrol interface manual explains the changes from a user’s perspective.
Gama Engineering announced it has completed its 50th EASA STC. The work entailed design and certification of a Garmin G600 EFIS system into a BN Islander used by the Belgian Coastguard. Gama carried out the design work on behalf of ASP Avionics from Belgium, one of many mainland-Europe customers taking advantage of Gama’s proven design and certification experience.
Air Comm has unveiled the first digital climate-control system for helicopters at Heli-Expo. The system will allow crew and passengers to dial in desired temperatures throughout the aircraft. Simply called the Digital Climate Control System, it automatically engages air-conditioning and heating as required to maintain the selected temperatures. It features separate zones and controls for cockpit and cabin.
Cessna is adopting “hybrid” fly-by-wire technology to actuate the flight controls on the Citation Columbus, formerly known as the Large Cabin Concept jet. This is Cessna’s first use of fly-by-wire flight controls in a Citation design, and the system combines electronic and mechanical control of flight control actuators.
