A United Airlines Boeing 777 turned back to Newark International Airport 45 minutes after departure on January 16 after five flight attendants were injured following an encounter with severe turbulence. The cabin crew had just begun service activities at the time the turbulence hit. No passengers were injured as all were still belted in their seats following the takeoff.

Facing the prospect of increasing competition from European carriers, El Al Israel Airlines plans to launch a new low-fare brand named Up next March. Up will start by offering one-way introductory fares of $69 for departures from Israel to Prague and Budapest; and $99 to Berlin, Kiev and Larnaca, Cyprus.

The captain of a United Airlines flight died after being transported to a local hospital in Boise, Idaho, on September 27. The pilot suffered a heart attack while in command of a Boeing 737 en route to Seattle from Houston with 166 people aboard. The flight landed safely under the command of the aircraft’s first officer, with no other injuries reported.

A French appeals court has overturned the manslaughter verdict against Continental Airlines resulting from the July 2000 crash of an Air France Concorde soon after takeoff from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). The initial ruling held Continental liable for the accident on the grounds that maintenance errors caused a 16-inch piece of titanium to fall from one of the U.S. airline’s DC10s during its takeoff roll just moments before the Concorde.

Alaska Airlines has placed a firm order for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, 17 MAX 9s and thirteen 737-900ERs, the Seattle-based airline and Boeing announced today. Worth $5 billion at list prices, the contract covers the largest order in Alaska Airlines’ history and raises the carrier’s firm order count for 737s to 75.

United Boeing 787

United Airlines has announced the first international routes for its soon-to-arrive Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The Chicago-based carrier, which is the North American launch customer for the 787, has said that it expects to place five 787s into service this year. It will take delivery of its first Dreamliner in late September.

Unionized pilots with United Airlines and the former Continental Airlines voted overwhelmingly on July 17 to authorize a possible strike, remaining, in the words of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), “wholly dissatisfied” with the pace of contract negotiations since the two airlines agreed to merge in May 2010.

Global Aviation Holdings, the largest commercial provider of charter lift to the U.S. military, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization February 5 in New York. The company cited reduced rates paid by the military, the end of the war in Iraq, the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan and decreased demand for commercial cargo services as driving its decision to seek relief from creditors.
