The chairman of the Aviation Safety Foundation Australia, a private-sector organization, expressed “grave concern” over the sustainability of general aviation in the country. Addressing a recent aviation conference in Australia, John Sharp said the federal government is not doing enough to foster the growth of GA. “Wherever you look, general aviation is in decline,” he asserted.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the JAA have both now validated the FAA’s type certificate for the Gulfstream 500. The dual validation allows the aircraft to be certified and registered in all 38 JAA member states, including the 25 countries of the European Union (EU), for which the EASA now has legal authority for issuing type certificates.

General aviation is not going to “blacken the sky” with very light jets, said General Aviation Manufacturers Association president and CEO Pete Bunce, and he took issue with those who would use that claim for a “misguided imposition” of user fees on GA.
The International Civil Aviation Organization adopted a “standard” to increase the upper age limit for airline pilots to 65, effective November 23. But the measure is limited to two-pilot crews when the other pilot is younger than 60 years of age. An ICAO “standard” is a mandatory minimum requirement and member states must notify ICAO if they are going to impose a more restrictive limit.
After a long period of strained relations between the UK general aviation community and the country’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the two groups are working together constructively to push for the implementation of recommendations from the strategic and regulatory reviews that they jointly concluded in June.
For several years large dark clouds have swept across the skies of light aviation in France. Last year less than 30 small piston airplanes were delivered here, compared with annual rates of 400 to 500 at the start of the 1970s.
Membership in the French Aeronautical Association (FFA), which includes 540 flying clubs across the country, has also declined, dropping by more than 3 percent over the last five years.
