Protectionists have sounded the familiar alarms over GE's joint venture with China's Avic, formalized during January's state visit to Washington by Chinese president Hu Jintao. The venture, an equal partnership between GE Aviation and Avic, will involve the development and marketing of integrated, open-architecture aviation electronic systems to the global commercial aerospace industry for new aircraft programs, according to GE.

Aviation Industry Corp. of China (AVIC) is undergoing another restructuring so that all of its assets are incorporated into a single company listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange. The plan would consolidate some $22 billion worth of aircraft production assets under the mantle of AVIChina as the group attempts to establish a corporate structure to match that of Boeing and Airbus.

Test pilots yesterday flew the first ARJ21-700 regional jet from its production site in Shanghai to China’s Flight Test Establishment in Xi’an, the capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi province, where developers plan to continue flight testing and earn type certification from the country’s civil aviation authorities. The 700-nm, two-hour, 19-minute trip marked the ARJ21’s longest flight to date, according to official Chinese sources.

China Aviation Industry Corp (AVIC) will build a $1.2 billion commercial helicopter plant in the northern port city of Tianjin with the local government to consolidate its diverse businesses. The move will allow the company to make full use of the geographical advantage of Tianjin as a port city, said a spokesman.

Airbus has started sending the first aircraft sections to the new A320 assembly line in Tianjin, China, the company announced today. Plans call for assembly of the first aircraft to start in August. Airbus expects launch customer Sichuan Airlines to take delivery of the first airplane by the end of June next year.

At Airshow China2004–held from November 1 to 6 in Zhuhai, Guangdong–Russian and Chinese helicopter manufacturers revealed new medium-weight helicopter projects. For the first time, Mil exhibited a model of the Mi-54, and AVIC II revealed details about the medium utility helicopter it is studying.

Design engineers from Eurocopter and the Harbin Aircraft subsidiary of China’s Avic II group gathered on January 9 at Marignane in the south of  France to open the common design office for the EC 175 helicopter program. The joint program, evenly shared between the Europeans and Chinese, calls for certification and entry into service in 2011. However, so far details about the twin-turbine, seven-ton-class rotorcraft are scarce.
