Some statistics indicate as much as 35 percent of flights in Europe are illegal charter flights–although EBAA puts this number at about 12 percent–but “the truth is nobody knows,” Aoife O’Sullivan, partner at law firm Gates and Partners, said yesterday at EBACE during a panel discussion about the problem.

Online charter portal Avinode (Booth No. C7818) is introducing a new suite of mobile applications for iPhones and iPads to put real-time aircraft availability data in the palm of the user’s hand. The Sweden-based group developed the apps so that charter operators and brokers can make them available to their clients, sparing them the chore of doing the complex development work themselves.

An early takeoff for seasonal holiday-driven traffic provoked a steep spike in demand for private charter flights. According to the latest forward-looking index from online charter portal Avinode, projected demand for this month was more than 75 points up on the November 1 level at 167.35. The December 1 index was almost 80 points above that recorded on the same day last year.

Illegal charter flights are increasingly common, according to operators and brokers who spoke to AIN, most of whom declined to go on the record with specific accusations, but agreed that the practice is especially prevalent in emerging markets such as Russia and that, generally, the authorities are not doing enough to police the situation.
