This week’s Singapore Airshow brought only one significant new launch, when Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) unveiled the Super Heron UAV. But as usual, there were plenty of defense requirements to discuss. These included Singapore’s desire to upgrade its F-16 fighters, and maritime surveillance requirements around the region.
A massive expansion of Changi International Airport will take place right next to the airshow site in Singapore. It includes a third runway and a fifth terminal, and will eventually double the hub’s capacity to 135 million passengers per year. The development forms part of a master plan that Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced last year.
Recognizing the long history of U.S. participation at the Singapore Airshow, this year’s event has chosen the United States to be the inaugural “Feature Country.” This new facet of the show focuses on a single nation with the aim of providing a forum for elevating bilateral trade relations, broadening commercial avenues between Singapore and the featured country, and as a platform for bringing new products and services to Singapore and the Far East region.
Goh Yong Kiat is a rare individual: a senior manager in the aerospace industry who is also an avid aviation enthusiast and historian. This home-grown talent has just published his fifth book, a pictorial history of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) entitled “Full Spectrum Force.”
Goh’s backlist includes histories of air logistics in the RSAF, and the history of Tengah airbase. But his major work was “Where Lions Fly,” a comprehensive history of aviation in Singapore, which was published in 2012 and is still available from Straits Times Press.
About 40 years after Singapore decided to build a new national airport at the former RAF Changi–initially anticipating requirements to accommodate 30 million passengers/year–the city state has seen a related decision also to reclaim land from the sea vindicated after traveller numbers reached 30 million in 2004, 40 million six years later and 50 million in 2012.
A slew of business aircraft will be on static display next week at the biennial Singapore Airshow, which will be held at its usual venue adjacent to Changi International Airport. The list includes the Beechcraft King Air 250 and 350i; Bombardier Global 6000 and Challenger 605; Cessna Caravan and Citation Sovereign+; Dassault Falcon 7X; Gulfstream G280 and G650; Piaggio Avanti II; Pilatus PC-12; and Socata TBM850.
Next month’s Singapore Airshow, to be held from February 11 to 16 at the Changi Exhibition Center, adjacent to Singapore’s Changi International Airport, promises to remain the main aerospace trade event in Asia this year. New this year will be an Aviation Training Zone, while the U.S. will be the “first ever Feature Country,” according to organizers (see box).
“We aspire to provide our exhibitors and visitors with a better experience at each subsequent edition of the Singapore Airshow,” says Jimmy Lau, managing director of show organizer Experia Events. “We also continue to demonstrate our relevance to the industry by anticipating market trends and introducing new features, enabling our exhibitors and visitors to tap emerging markets and be updated on the latest products and technologies.”
Jet Aviation Singapore is constructing a new hangar at Seletar Aerospace Park slated to be completed in early February next year. The new 100,900-sq-ft structure will triple the size of the current facility, and it will have two floors providing 43,700 sq ft of space for shops and offices. The new facility will also add 100,965 sq ft of apron area.
The new construction, which is alongside Jet Aviation Singapore’s current maintenance and FBO operation, will be unveiled at an opening celebration at the Singapore Airshow in February.
Signature Flight Support officially opened its new FBO at Singapore Changi International Airport on Sunday, just two months after announcing its newest Asian location at EBACE 2013. This location marks the second facility in Asia for Signature. (The company has also invested in the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre at Chek Lap Kok/Hong Kong International Airport.)
