A new full flight simulator for training on the Sukhoi SSJ100 arrived for installation at the SuperJet International (SJI) Training Center in Venice, Italy, early last month. SuperJet International said it expected installation of the L-3 Communications-made simulator to take 30 days, after which it will undergo an “extensive” phase of on-site testing. The company will then apply for final approval of the EASA STD (synthetic training device) evaluation team, allowing for the start of training, potentially this month.

FlightSafety International is moving to expand and upgrade its helicopter training portfolio substantially, according to David Davenport, vice president of operations.

“Helicopter training has been a high-growth business for FlightSafety for many years. We have always been the factory-authorized training provider for Bell and Sikorsky. We’ve also tried to branch out into highly successful helicopters such as the [Eurocopter] EC135 and [AgustaWestland] AW139,” Davenport said.

Simulation technology and flight training provider CAE (Stand 468) will set up its first Asian business aviation facility in Shanghai, China later this year. The Canada-based group, which is celebrating 65 years of business in 2012, will then have eight training centers around the world.

FlightSafety International (FSI) has opened its new Hong Kong Learning Center, which initially will be based around a Gulfstream G450/G550 flight simulator. The U.S.-based training group held an opening ceremony there on Tuesday.

Airwolf Aerospace of Middlefield, Ohio (Booth No.10243) announced it has received FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval for its recently PMA-approved Torsion-Tension-(TT) Straps for Bell 206 JetRanger, 206L LongRanger and OH 58 helicopters, as well as STCs from the European Aviation Safety Association (EASA), Brazil’s Agencia Nacional de Aviacao Civil (ANAC) and Transport Canada.

These STCs will allow installation of the straps in regions of the world that do not otherwise permit use of PMA parts for flight critical components.

CAE received FAA level-D approval for a Hawker Beechcraft King Air 350 Pro Line 21 flight simulator at its Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport location. The CAE 5000 series sim features the latest-generation image generators, airport databases and a liquid crystal on silicon visual display. In other news, CAE recently passed Dassault Aviation’s Falcon training policy manual quality system audit, which is designed to ensure adequate training services for all Falcon-affiliated personnel.

After a year best described as challenging, flight-training provider FlightSafety International has seen an uptick in business since January and is adding another training site to its worldwide network, as well as several new training platforms at some of its locations. “We are seeing a little bit of life here in the first quarter,” said Eric Hinson, the company’s executive vice president.
