The UK’s Oxford Airport (Booth No. 1359) is achieving recession-busting traffic figures. For the period from April 2009 to March 2010 there was a 31.6-percent increase in the numbers of all visiting aircraft (including scheduled airline services) and a 12-percent increase in all business aviation movements.
With scheduled airline traffic, holiday charter and business flying growing at euphoric rates, airport capacity shortage lurks at many of Europe’s conurbations. This evolution makes it essential for the business aviation community to contribute to keeping smaller airports open, because they may soon be the only places where executive jets can land.
ERA members elected four new board members at the end of their general assembly in Salzburg, Austria. Elfrieke van Galen, managing director of KLM Cityhopper and CEO of KLM uk, has been chosen to replace former Augsburg Airways president Olaf Dlugi. Chris Beaton, Bombardier Regional Aircraft v-p of international sales, was appointed to replace his recently retired predecessor, John Howarth, as a manufacturer representative.
FBO Ireland started business jet handling at Dublin Airport last month, operating out of the main terminal. The Shannon-based group is now negotiating to open a new executive facility at Dublin. Next month, FBO Ireland is scheduled to start business aircraft handling at Ireland’s Cork Airport.
“It’s the most important piece of undiscovered aviation property east of the Mississippi,” asserted Tom Carver, president of the New Jersey Aviation Association. And what piece of property was he referring to? The Trenton-Mercer Airport, close by the northwest corner of the state capital city.
British Airways transferred its maintenance base to Wales’ Cardiff International Airport more than a decade ago when costs got too high at its London Heathrow headquarters. Another factor in that decision was the lack of space at Heathrow to deal with the carrier’s growing widebody fleet of Boeing 747s and, more recently, 777s.
