Lufthansa Technik Switzerland in Basel has been unable to sustain its operations and will be closing its two line maintenance and logistics services businesses at the end of April.
“We will no longer have any operations at Basel Airport. We’re leaving the facility permanently,” a spokesman for the MRO told AIN. According to the company, the plant closure will lead to 31 job terminations, though another 29 employees will transfer to Swiss at the Basel site.
Two new iPad applications offered by Pilatus through Apple’s iTunes store allow the user to create a personal PC-12 NG interior design and exterior paint scheme. The apps, one for the interior and one for the exterior, may be downloaded and installed on the iPad at no charge.
The interior design app lets the user to select from one of four BMW DesignWorks USA interior themes specifically designed for the North and South American markets. In addition, customers can make individual adjustments to wood, carpet, leather, plating and other interior materials.
An Embraer Phenom 300 on a flight from Genève-Cointrin Airport (LSGG) in Switzerland was damaged following an August 6 runway excursion at its destination, St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport (LSZR), Switzerland. All three people on board escaped uninjured. The jet landed on Runway 10 but overshot the end of the paved surface, breaking through an airport fence before sliding to a stop in a field. Weather at LSZR at the time of the accident was reported as scattered clouds at 6,000 feet with good visibility in light rain.
The 11th edition of the annual European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (Ebace) is set to open on Tuesday in Geneva. Joint organizers EBAA and NBAA expect the event to be 16 percent larger than last year’s and, in terms of the area of booked exhibit space, it could even be the biggest yet with almost 500 exhibitors signed to set up shop at Geneva’s Palexpo center.
EuroAirport, which serves the cities of Basel, Switzerland; Mulhouse, France; and Freiburg, Germany; is home to a considerable maintenance and completion industry, with companies such as Jet Aviation, Lufthansa Technik and Amac specializing in large aircraft. Last month Air Service Basel officially opened a new facility at the airport to serve owners of small and midsize executive jets.
The organizers of the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva, a joint venture between NBAA and European counterpart EBAA, expect the 2009 edition of the show to be about the same size as the 2008 event, but are working on improvements aimed at making the convention better than ever. EBACE 2009 will take place from May 12 to 14 at the PalExpo convention center next to Geneva’s international airport.
Crossair founder Moritz Suter announced on July 17 that he plans to launch a new regional airline. The airline’s first service would link Geneva with Lugano three times daily.
Although the project remains in its infancy, Suter has already submitted proposals for support to the township of Lugano and the local government of the canton of Ticino, as well as the Lugano Agno Airport for “symbolic” (low) landing fees.
The eighth annual European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE), held this week in Geneva, has shattered records for attendance, as well as orders announced at the show. At press time, EBACE was heading to fulfill projections that more than 14,000 visitors would pass through its doors to visit the record roster of 444 exhibitors. Last year’s edition drew 11,267 attendees.
NetJets Europe is here at EBACE holding its first company-wide career fair tomorrow. It will start with a presentation at 11 a.m. in room D in Palexpo’s Hall 1. Attendees will then be given the opportunity to talk to NetJets Europe representatives. The company is looking for pilots and cabin crew and is also offering a variety of positions in marketing, flight operations and maintenance.
Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg recently spent their first 25 hours at the controls of a flight simulator that replicates the cockpit in the first Solar Impulse prototype HB-SIA. Piccard flew the prototype from Tuesday, May 13 at 7:27 a.m. to Wednesday, May 14 at 8:43 a.m., and Borschberg from Thursday, May 15 at 7:20 a.m. to Friday, May 16 at 8:38 a.m.
