Pilots in Southern California are urged to use caution now that the new north and south Los Angeles Class D airspace became active on June 28. The north Class D airspace stands adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Class B airspace and Santa Monica Airport (SMO) Class D airspace.
Just because there’s no FAA regulation requiring Part 91 operators to complete an official international training program before they blast off to other parts of the planet doesn’t mean skipping such a program is a good idea, even if it is legal.
More airspace will be opening for general aviation flights in China, according to NBAA. Initial airspace reforms in the flight control areas of Changchun and Guangzhou were completed late last year, and now the People’s Liberation Army Air Force is working to expand these flight control areas further, as well as the flight control sub-areas of Chengdu, Lanzhou, Jinan and Nanjing.
Flying a business air plane outside the U.S. isn’t all work. It’s also an adventure that offers U.S. pilots a chance to see how the other half–or actually the other 90 percent of the world–lives. Let’s be serious: Americans are spoiled by our own version of the aviation industry, such as when it comes to working the ATC system. A last-minute trip appears in Atlanta and we file a quick flight plan from our iPhones.
Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is now using Passur’s AirportMonitor system to supplement its longstanding use of Passur’s data feeds and software for the airport’s noise-monitoring system. AirportMonitor helps the airport work closely with neighbors, who can view aircraft traffic in “near-live” time and replay modes to see how traffic affects the airspace over their homes.
A Gulfstream V erroneously squawked that a hijacking was under way as it crossed through Canadian airspace one late October afternoon, leading airspace defense officials to instruct it to land at Brandon, Manitoba. According to Canadian police, Nav Canada was dissatisfied with the response it received from the cockpit crew and directed the diversion.
Six additional flight levels will be introduced later this month in northern Canada airspace when Nav Canada implements reduced vertical separation minimum airspace (RVSM) from 57 deg north latitude to the North Pole from FL 290 through FL 410 inclusive (see also page 82). A transition area to and from the 1,000-ft vertical separation routes of RVSM airspace will extend to 52 deg north latitude.
As deadlines for domestic and expanded international reduced vertical separation minimum airspace draw nearer, more and more opportunities are popping up for operators to obtain installation of RVSM-approved avionics and other required equipment. Arinc, Jet Source and West Star Aviation are among the latest organizations to announce RVSM solutions. In some cases, competition is helping drive down prices.
Phase One of a proposal by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to improve airspace capacity will require aircraft owners in the UK to upgrade to a Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) Mode-S transponder by March 31, 2012. In addition, all new installations of SSR transponders must be Mode-S compliant beyond March 31 next year.
Europe’s controlled airspace is to be expanded to absorb air transport growth, leaving the general aviation community with the prospect of paying air traffic management fees and having to adjust to a more complex operating environment.
