After four years of flight tests, the first upgraded Lockheed Martin C-5M Super Galaxy was redelivered to the U.S. Air Force late last month. The most significant of the more than 70 changes in the reliability enhancement and re-engining program is the replacement of the four GE TF39 turbofans with modern GE CF6-80C2 engines that deliver 22 percent more thrust, improved fuel consumption and lower noise.

The U.S. FAA granted avionics display provider Barco FAR Part 145 repair station authorization at its service center in Duluth, Georgia. The approval enables Barco to perform maintenance on control display units and flight displays used in a variety of airplanes, including the Boeing 737-700, Lockheed C-130J, Lockheed C-5, Pilatus PC-12 and Grob SPn.

The future of the U.S. Air Force C-5 Galaxy airlifter fleet has finally been settled, after years of debate about its unreliability and the cost of fixes. All 111 aircraft will benefit from the avionics modernization program (AMP), which replaces obsolete navigation, communication and cockpit instrumentation and provides a digital architecture backbone.
