A major breakthrough in heat exchanger technology has removed one of the greatest obstacles to development of an air-breathing rocket engine slated to enable spaceflight by the Skylon reusable spaceplane.

UK company Fine Tubes (Hall 2B E170) has managed to produce 2,000 kilometers of ultra-fine, lightweight nickel alloy tubing necessary to enable the heat exchangers at the heart of the new engine to cool airstreams from over 1000 degrees C to minus 150 degrees C in less than 1/100th of a second. The wall thickness of the tubing is half the diameter of a human hair.

Before the financial crisis in the days of the money-no-object approach to business aviation, the attitude of some FBOs when asked what handling services would cost was a rather snooty, “If you need to ask the price, it’s probably not for you, sir.” Preposterously inflated prices and widespread inconsistency and lack of transparency were all too common in the industry.

BAE Systems’s asset management division has reported an uptick in demand for its portfolio of pre-owned Avro RJ and 146 regional jets. The UK-based group is also taking on more contracts to remarket other manufacturers’ aircraft and is seeing growth in its product support and engineering activities.

Hawker Pacific, a leading general aviation sales and support company throughout Asia, is to be sold by Sweden’s Saab group to Lynton International Holdings of the UK. The deal has been agreed in principle for an undisclosed amount and should be completed over the next few months.

The future of the Defence Export Services Organisation is under review by the new UK government. The agency promotes British arms sales abroad, and has administered the ongoing but controversial Al-Yamamah contracts through which the UK sold the Royal Saudi Air Force 120 Tornado combat jets, 50 Hawk and 50 PC-9 trainers, all supplied and supported by BAE Systems.
