UTC’s Duracarb carbon brake system for the Lockheed Martin C-130  transport yields up to eight times the life of steel brakes.

UTC Aerospace Systems (Chalet CD07) has been awarded a contract to provide the Royal Australian Air Force with upgraded wheels and brakes for its Lockheed Martin C-130 transport aircraft. Delivery of the new equipment is scheduled for May at Richmond Air Base in New South Wales.

This month UTC Aerospace Systems will complete deliveries of new brakes and wheels for the U.S. Air Force’s entire Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules fleet. The brakes replace the original equipment, offering significant performance improvements, enhanced maintainability and reduced life-cycle costs. Compared to the original steel brakes, the new brakes cool much quicker, resulting in reduced time on the ground in “hot” landing zones.

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty will be Eurocopter’s single-source supplier for wheels and brakes on the new X4 medium-twin helicopter. The Safran company will provide the two nosewheels, two main wheels and two electric brakes, the electronic brake controller and four brake pedal transmitter units. Messier-Bugatti-Dowty’s electric brakes are designed “to reduce weight, while retaining excellent friction properties” and simplifying maintenance.

Italy’s Mecaer Aviation Group (MAG) has become the exclusive tier-one supplier to Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) for the complete landing system for Hurkus, Turkey’s new primary and basic trainer aircraft. MAG will be responsible for engineering system integration, hydraulic steering system hydraulic actuation, braking system, brakes, tires and landing gear cockpit controls for the tandem-configured Hurkus.

The FAA issued a special airworthiness information bulletin (SAIB NM-09-18) last month warning operators of aircraft equipped with carbon disc brakes that absorbed moisture in the carbon discs can freeze and lock wheels. The SAIB resulted from an incident involving a Bombardier Global Express that flew from Van Nuys, Calif., to London Luton Airport.

Bombardier Aerospace recently flew a Global 5000 testbed with an all-electric braking system, which the Canadian company claims is a civil aviation first. The testing lasted more than seven hours and included five landings and a series of high-speed braked ground runs. The demonstrator aircraft was equipped with Meggitt’s EBrake electric braking system and Messier-Dowty’s landing gear with electric brake wiring harnesses.

According to François Tarel, the Safran group subsidiary’s vice president for wheels and brakes, the system received its “safety of flight” approval from Boeing last November, following a series of bench tests.

Aircraft Braking Systems Corp. (ABSC) was recently awarded contracts for main wheels, carbon brakes and nosewheels for the Dasault Falcon 900EX and Gulfstream IV. The Akron, Ohio-based ABSC already produces braking systems for Falcon 10, 20, and 50 aircraft, and will introduce a brake-by-wire (BBW) digital braking system for the Falcon 900 similar to other ABSC BBW systems installed on six aircraft models.
