On July 31, less than two months after receiving FAA and Transport Canada certification, the new Bombardier Challenger 300 super-midsize business jet was awarded JAA approval. The first customer Challenger 300 is scheduled to enter service in the fourth quarter.

At last month’s Paris Air Show, Rockwell Collins announced certification by U.S. and Canadian authorities of the company’s Pro Line 21 cockpit in the super-midsize Bombardier Challenger 300. The flight deck contains four 12- by 10-inch LCDs and integrates a number of advanced technologies, including TCAS II and TAWS, as standard. Options include turbulence-detection weather radar and 3-D FMS navigation maps.

Citation owners, looking to replace or add another steed to their stables, usually buy another Citation. Falcon owners, for the most part, buy another Falcon. And Gulfstream owners generally buy Gulfstreams.

Dallas-based Bombardier Flexjet announced at the end of April that it had added the new Challenger 605 to its fractional fleet. Five Challenger 605s are among 24 new aircraft scheduled to enter service with Flexjet this year. Other new arrivals will include the super-midsize Challenger 300 and midsize Learjet 60XR.

For the first time Europe has its own simulator capacity for the Global Express, now that CAE and Bombardier have begun offering pilot and technical training on the big business jets at CAE’s Burgess Hill facility in the UK. The program marks the first operational milestone of the 20-year Authorized Training Provider agreement signed by CAE and Bombardier last June.

Bombardier’s Challenger 300 and 605 have received type approval from Brazil’s aviation authority, Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC). According to Bombardier, the Challenger 300 can fly nonstop from São Paulo to San Juan with eight passengers, and the Challenger 605 can fly nonstop from São Paulo to Miami with eight passengers.

Early last month, while Bombardier’s Wichita and Canadian business jet production and assembly facilities remained closed during an unprecedented, four-month plant shutdown that started in late December, the aerospace unit revealed that 3,000 employees–10 percent of its worldwide employment force–will be laid off over the next 12 months.
