Flight Display Systems has provided a custom 20-inch flip-up monitor to NASA for its Boeing 747SP, which is taking part in the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (Sofia) research program. The display is intended to monitor infrared emissions from space as part of Sofia, which is funded jointly by NASA and the German Aerospace Center. The centerpiece of the research is a 2.5-meter-diameter telescope mounted in the 747SP.

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport-based Banyan Air Service’s avionics department recently completed a high-speed-data/WiFi installation on an executive Boeing 757. The Banyan Avionics travel team performed the installation at the customer’s MRO of choice during a maintenance inspection. The travel team has now performed high-speed-data/WiFi installations on the Boeing 727/737/747SP/757. In addition, Banyan recently secured a contract to outfit three Boeing 737s with Aircell ATG-5000 high-speed Internet.

Mitsubishi MRJ

Mitsubishi Aircraft received a huge dose of credibility at the Farnborough International airshow yesterday by announcing a 100-aircraft commitment for MRJ90s from the largest regional airline holding company in the world–SkyWest Airlines. The agreement in principle, signed just this week, potentially raises the MRJ regional jet family backlog to 170 airplanes and gives Mitsubishi its second major U.S. customer.

Pratt & Whitney signed a definitive agreement with Russia’s Irkut on Tuesday to supply the PurePower PW1400G turbofan for Irkut’s planned MC-21 narrowbodies. The contract secures the PurePower engine—formerly known as the Geared Turbofan—as the only Western powerplant offered on the 150- to 210-seat series of jets.

TAG Group vice president Aziz Ojjeh and a team of four other pilots broke a
31-year-old speed record for a pole-to-pole circumnavigation of the globe in late November. The TransPolar08 crew circled the globe over the North and South Poles in a Bombardier Global Express, chopping 95 minutes off the record previously held by a Pan Am Boeing 747SP that made the trip in October 1977.

Aziz Ojjeh, vice president and one of the owners of Luxembourg-based TAG Group Holdings, is planning to set a new record for an around-the-world flight over the poles in the company’s Bombardier Global Express (HB-JEX). Planned for November so that airfields in Antarctica are available for emergency use, the flight will depart from and return to Farnborough Airport in England, and make five refueling stops.
