Dassault Aviation’s long-awaited unveiling of the Falcon 5X large-cabin, long-range business jet is being accompanied by a number of Falcon 5X supplier announcements.
The recent experience of the crew of a Part 121-operated Embraer ERJ-145 underscores the value of returning to the destination in the event of encountering icing. The crew noticed that ice (which they later classified as “severe”) had begun accumulating on the windshield wipers and nose and that the aircraft’s anti-ice system could not be turned on. As they attempted to operate the anti-ice manually, the system came to life but produced a master warning on the Eicas followed by a “bleed air 2 overtemp” warning.
Anti-icing surfaces under development at GE and EADS could one day reduce and possibly even eliminate the need for existing anti-icing techniques. Research organizations at the two major aerospace companies are currently working on surfaces that would naturally repel ice without using energy.
Embraer performed the Legacy 500 first engine run on January 17 at its headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil, the company said yesterday. Between the midsize jet’s December 23 rollout and the first run of its Honeywell HTF7500E engines, Embraer conducted several ground tests, including APU and refueling tests.

In the quest to develop more aircraft systems driven by electricity and to improve reliability, Bombardier Aerospace completed another milestone in its Strategic Technology program for civil aviation: known-icing tests of an electro-thermal wing leading-edge ice-protection system. The system features a Fokker composite electro-thermal leading edge, Meggitt heaters and a power harness using ICE Corp.
Boeing has added Hamilton Sundstrand to its team of suppliers on the KC-46 aerial tanker, awarding it a contract to supply its environmental-control system, electric-power generation system, emergency ram-air turbine system, fans and engine bleed-air system, engine controls and accessories, bleed-air leak detection system and the engine/APU fire detection and overheat detection system.
The Sikorsky CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter program this week achieved “ready to load” condition with the successful light-off of its first auxiliary power unit (APU). The program will be ready to begin formal integration testing early next year.
