Attending its first ERA assembly since abandoning development of the Avro RJX regional jet series late last year, BAE Systems was able to announce a wave of new lease deals. Turkish Airlines extended its lease for 12 Avro RJs–nine RJ100s and three RJ70s–for the third time since taking the aircraft in 1993.

National Jet Systems opened a regional aircraft maintenance facility in Brisbane, Australia. The 62,000-sq-ft complex includes a 46,000-sq-ft hangar that will hold three airliners simultaneously. The company operates a fleet of BAE Systems 146s and Avro RJs on wet leases for flag carrier Qantas and as corporate shuttles for the Australian mining industry.

A Swiss federal prosecutor confirmed today that he will indict Moritz Suter, André Dosé and four former employees with management functions of the defunct regional airline Crossair for homicide by neglect in connection with the crash of an Avro RJ100 during approach on Zurich Airport on Nov. 24, 2001. The prosecutor announced plans to bring charges last November, but he identified the suspects only by their initials.

Abu Dhabi-based executive charter operator Royal Jet plans to double the size of its fleet by 2013, which will mark the fast-growing operator’s 10th anniversary. By then it expects to have two dozen aircraft and predicts that the total will reach 50 by 2020. Annual revenues are projected to reach $500 million within five years.

The successor to Belgium’s Sabena Airlines unveiled its new name last month as talks continued between shareholders in Sabena regional subsidiary Delta Air Transport (DAT) and Virgin Express to save the country’s flag carrier from extinction. Shareholders chose the name SN Brussels Airlines mainly because it allows the financially strapped carrier to retain the Sabena logo and its SN code for flight numbers.

Northwest Airlines is considering exercising its right to terminate the Avro RJ85 agreement under which Mesaba leases and operates 36 of the four-engine jets, according to the Minneapolis-based regional airline. Under the terms of a 1996 regional jet services agreement between Northwest and Mesaba, Northwest can end the agreement by giving notice to Mesaba on or before October 28 this year.

As part of a wide-ranging rationalization of its global spares support business, BAE Systems Regional Aircraft (BAERA) has transferred all its Jetstream 31/32 spares to Saywell International, and factory-surplus BAe 146/Avro RJ inventory to Ansett Spares & Service.
