Signature Flight Support has increased its European network of FBOs to 23 bases with the September 12 takeover of Interflight Executive Aircraft Services at London Gatwick Airport. The company now controls the only FBO at Gatwick through the acquisition of Interflight’s parent company, Southern Aero Services. According to Signature parent company BBA Aviation, the deal was valued at £4.5 million ($7.9 million), debt free.

London-area FBO chain Harrods Aviation has opened its new 8,000-sq-ft facility at London’s Luton Airport. The expanded premises, which immediately adjoin the company’s existing 2,000-sq-ft building, include a larger lounge, private VIP lounge, conference suite, flight-planning room and handling office. Crews now have their own lounge with Internet access. An enlarged 90,000-sq-ft ramp is immediately accessible from the building.

The DeBeers diamond mining group is shutting down its Dravidian Air Services operation at London Heathrow Airport, and it is trying to sell its pair of 19-year-old Hawker 700Bs.

After several years of bitter debate, partial privatization of the UK’s ATC system became a reality on July 27 when the Airline Group completed the acquisition of a 46-percent stake in National Air Traffic Services (NATS). The government has retained a 49-percent stake, with the remaining 5 percent going to NATS employees.

The UK government has approved an increase in weekend movements at London-area Farnborough Airport. On March 13, TAG Aviation won its appeal against an earlier local government decision not to allow an increase from 2,500 to 5,000 movements on weekends and public holidays.

London-area Oxford Airport recently started work on a new business aviation terminal, the first phase of a major investment by the airport’s new owners, Reuben Brothers, since purchasing it last summer from BBA Aviation. The new facility will triple the space of the existing GA terminal and is scheduled for completion in June.

Reports attributed to the captain of a British Airways Boeing 777 that sustained heavy damage when landing at London Heathrow Airport at about 12:42 GMT today indicate that the airplane lost all power before touching down short of Runway 27L. Flight BA038 inbound from Beijing reportedly touched down 1,200 feet short of the threshold and “almost 3,000 feet short” of the normal touchdown point for landing.
