Honeywell is moving aggressively to revitalize its Part 23 aircraft avionics division, Bendix/King, which was the dominant player until the ascension of Garmin, Avidyne and the like. In recent months the company has hired a new CEO, former Piper Aircraft president Kevin Gould, who is in the process of building a new management team and hiring more engineers as the company moves into the glass-panel age.
Avidyne is close to obtaining certification of its DFC90 autopilot interface with Aspen’s EFD1000 PFD. Avidyne and Aspen Avionics demonstrated Avidyne’s new digital autopilot interfaced with Aspen’s EFD1000 Pro primary flight display (PFD) last month in two flight-test aircraft: a Cessna 182 and a Cirrus SR22. The DFC90 is currently certified in Cirrus SRs and Piper PA-46s equipped with Avidyne Entegra displays.

The annual Sun ’n’ Fun light aircraft convention opened today in Lakeland, Fla., with product-enhancement announcements from several exhibitors. Cessna will add optional flight into known icing (FIKI) capability to its Corvalis TTX high-performance piston single through an integrated wet system molded into the aircraft’s composite wings.
Esterline CMC Electronics has secured the launch customer for its SmartDeck avionics suite–the twin-turboprop EV-55 Outback utility airplane under development by Czech Republic-based aircraft manufacturer Evektor.
According to Evektor marketing manager Petr Grebenicek, Avidyne and Garmin avionics were under consideration, too.

At EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, Rockwell Collins welcomed visitors to its pleasantly air-conditioned pavilion to share new technologies that are coming soon to cabin-class cockpits, including a touchscreen interface for the Pro Line Fusion avionics suite. Rockwell Collins tested the touchscreen concept extensively with focus groups, with the goal of providing a way for pilots to keep their eyes forward instead of buried in a center console when manipulating avionics. The Rockwell Collins touchscreen PFD and MFD Pro Line Fusion system is targeted at a wide sector of the market, from single-engine turboprops and light jets to Part 25 jets.
Avidyne’s TAS600 traffic advisory system received validation from Brazil’s Agência Nacional De Aviação Civil (ANAC), allowing the system to be installed in Brazil-registered aircraft under Avidyne’s approved model list (AML) STC. The AML covers more than 400 aircraft, including some Brazil-certified Indústria Aeronáutica NeivaEmbraer models and licensed Piper models built in Brazil.
At EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., this week, Aspen Avionics and AvConnect unveiled “Connected Panel,” which allows pilots to use mobile devices to communicate with avionics systems. The new system’s hardware consists of the CG100 Connected Panel unit, which will be mounted behind the instrument panel. It has USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity and flash memory storage.
Avidyne announced this week at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., that it is joining the push into touchscreen avionics control with the launch of the IFD540 FMS/GPS/navcom system. The IFD540 is a plug-and-play replacement for the Garmin GNS530, slotting into the Garmin tray and taking up the same real estate on the panel.
