Bell Helicopter has tapped Honeywell (Booth No. C4304) to provide the auxiliary power unit (APU) and environmental control system for the new Bell 525 Relentless, which is scheduled to start flying next year. The Honeywell RE100 APU selected for the super-medium twin helicopter is lighter and more fuel efficient than competing systems, according to Honeywell. It allows operators to run critical avionics and electronics systems without turning on the main engine, further reducing total fuel consumption.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board confirmed today that the fire that broke out Monday in a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 at Boston Logan Airport emanated from the airplane’s aft electrical equipment bay, near the APU battery box.
Honeywell (Stand 625) has received EASA certification of its Ovation Select cabin management system (CMS) for the Boeing BBJ and, in partnership with Jet Aviation, delivered the first system to a BBJ3 customer in the Middle East. Jet Aviation Basel (Stand 590) did the completion project on the BBJ3, including installation of a Honeywell MCS-7200 satellite communications system.
The Microturbo e-APU60, a new concept in auxiliary power units (APUs), recently completed a 150-hour block test and is progressing toward certification, Microturbo, a Safran Group company, announced at the NBAA Convention. “These tests gave us the opportunity to validate the reliability and the endurance of this new concept, meeting our expectations and those of our first customer, AgustaWestland,” said Pierre-Yves Morvan, CEO of Microturbo. “This milestone represents a significant step forward for the program.”
The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive for the Cessna 750’s auxiliary power unit DC generator prompted by overvoltage events. The AD requires replacing the APU generator control unit to prevent DC generator overvoltage events, which could result in smoke in the cockpit and loss of avionics and electrical systems. On June 25 a notice of proposed rulemaking was issued proposing the APU generator control unit be replaced and the public was given the opportunity to comment.
Efforts to reduce the thousands of gallons of jet fuel now being burned each year just to move aircraft to and from runways are very much in evidence at the 2012 Farnborough International airshow. No fewer than four new products vying for the attention of airline and airport managements, including efforts by Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), L-3, Safran/Honeywell and WheelTug, and they each have taken a different approach.
Hamilton Sundstrand has signed an agreement with Fokker Services to provide spare parts in support of Fokker repair work at its Amsterdam facility. The purchase contract, which runs through 2016, is valued at $33.2 million. It covers “integrated drive generators and other equipment” for aircraft built mainly by Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier and Fokker.

In-flight start has been demonstrated already, and the test unit has also successfully restarted one of the main engines in flight. “The e-APU60 is performing accordingly with our ambitious goals,” said Pierre-Yves Morvan, Microturbo’s CEO.

Dallas Airmotive’s regional turbine center at Singapore’s Seletar Aerospace Park celebrated its official opening with a ceremony on Monday led by general manager Francis Lee. The center will offer authorized Honeywell services for auxiliary power units (APUs) and business aviation engines, and respond to aircraft-on-ground (AOG) situations.
