Bombardier Aerospace recently completed a non-temperature-restricted bleedless auxiliary power unit starting test, following a 10-hour cold soak at -40 degrees F and using a starter/generation system and lithium-ion battery system. The Safran Microturbo e-APU system included a starter generator and power electronics from Thales and a Saft Li-ion battery system. The prototype equipment was designed for business jets, Bombardier said. The tests were conducted at the Safran Turbomeca cold-chamber facility in Pau, France.
Auxiliary power unit
Safran subsidiary Microturbo’s new e-APU60 auxiliary power unit received certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration last month. It achieved European approval in May last year.
Safran subsidiary Microturbo’s new e-APU60 auxiliary power unit received FAA certification, the company announced today. It received EASA approval in May last year. The APU, which has already been selected for the AgustaWestland AW189, is designed to “meet the demands of new-generation more-electric aircraft,” according to Microturbo.
Honeywell has announced that it is partnering with GMF AeroAsia to maintain the 131-9A auxiliary power units for the new Airbus A320 fleet being acquired by Garuda Indonesia. The first five of a 25-aircraft order are being delivered this year, with the last due in 2018.
Dassault has selected the Thales TopStart electric starter-generator system for the Falcon 5X. The equipment manufacturer claims the unit reduces weight and improves engine durability. The system marks the first time the Paris-based company has combined electric starting and power generation functions in a single unit for a business jet.
Dassault Falcon introduced its Falcon 5X just one day ago, and already it is announcing partners in the aircraft’s production. At NBAA 2013 the company announced that it has selected Pratt & Whitney’s APS500[D] auxiliary power unit to provide the aircraft with electrical power for main engine starting and cabin air-conditioning on the ground. Pratt & Whitney Aeropower is partnering with Safran Microturbo to customize the APU for the 5X.

Safran Microturbo’s new e-APU60 auxiliary power unit is set to enter service by year-end on AgustaWestland’s new AW189 helicopter. Currently, the company had delivered 10 production APUs to the rotorcraft manufacturer and now it is pursuing other business aircraft applications, including small- and medium-sized jets and other rotorcraft.
As part of a growing suite of noise- and pollution-control measures, France’s Nice Cote D’ Azur Airport will invest in the installation of a new underground power system that will reduce business jets’ dependency on auxiliary power units on the ramp. The system, the first of its kind in Europe, provides hatches under each aircraft engine start-up stand for access to a centralized power and heating/cooling system, greatly reducing the number of APU operation hours, as well as reducing exhaust emissions. The $2.7 million project is expected to begin this summer.
Bell Helicopter has tapped Honeywell to provide the auxiliary power unit (APU) and environmental control system for the new Bell 525 Relentless, which is scheduled to start flying next year. The Honeywell RE100 APU selected for the super-medium twin helicopter is lighter and more fuel efficient than competing systems, according to Honeywell. Honeywell’s AC-5510 environmental control system will provide heating and air-conditioning for the 16-passenger helicopter.
