Argus International implemented several updates to the audit standard that it uses to qualify a charter operator for the Argus Platinum and Gold Plus rating. The additions are intended to create an “even more valuable and informative audit process,” said Argus president and CEO Joe Moeggenberg.

Business aviation operators are lacking in safety management system (SMS) internal evaluation programs and safety training, according to the 2013 SMS Audit Result report released yesterday by aviation services company Argus. The report highlights recurring deficiencies found in SMS implementation and execution, it said.

“A view into the industry-wide aperture helps aviation operators focus their efforts on common deficiency areas cited by auditors,” Argus noted. “Operators can then use this information to improve their own SMS implementation and execution efforts.”

Although the FAA has developed a risk-based assessment process for inspectors to identify areas of greatest concern at repair stations, the agency is emphasizing mandatory inspections and not high-risk areas, according to an audit conducted by the Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General and issued on May 1.

The audit examined 27 randomly selected repair stations in the U.S., Brazil, China, New Zealand, Peru and Singapore that maintain aircraft operated by U.S. Part 121 air carriers.

APP Jet Center at Hayward Executive underwent a rigorous process to be the first FBO certified to NATA’s Safety First ground audit standard.

The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) announced last month that APP Jet Center at Hayward Executive Airport in Hayward, Calif., is the first FBO to complete the requirements for its Safety 1st Ground Audit Standard. Introduced more than a year ago, the standard is intended to promote best practices in the aircraft service industry, and the association believes the program will eventually become the bar by which all FBOs are judged.

Wyvern, a global aviation safety auditing, consulting and information services company, recently announced that its Wingman portfolio–flight departments that have undergone the Wyvern audit process–has now grown to more than 120 companies in 29 countries. “Our standards far exceed government regulatory requirements,” according to the company. This mean, Wyvern added, that only companies with a demonstrated commitment to safety make the effort to become a Wyvern Wingman.

NationAir Aviation Insurance has added in-house IS-BAO audits to its services. The company’s claims advisor, Tom Surgalski, is now an accredited IS-BAO auditor and will provide its new offerings, which include Stage I, II and III IS-BAO audits, gap audits and general consulting on IS-BAO standards and safety management systems. Surgalski will be available to discuss IS-BAO issues at NationAir’s booth at the NBAA Convention next week.

NetJets sister company Executive Jet Management successfully completed an on-site audit and has become a Wyvern Wingman. Charter operators that undergo the on-site safety audit and are found to meet the rigorous safety standards conducted by Wyvern auditors are recommended for use by all Wyvern clients. Operators that successfully complete the audit have already met the Wyvern Standard, a “globally recognized seal of excellence.”

GHS Aviation, an international consulting, auditing and training company, signed a deal August 2 with Nairobi-based Kenya Airways to open an African office. The McLean, Va.-based auditor provides systems-based airline safety and security solutions, as well as IATA Operational Safety Audit services.

The Aeronautical Repair Station Association (Arsa) is seeking input from the aviation maintenance industry through an anonymous survey measuring the burden FAA audits impose on repair stations.

Arsa is conducting the survey in tandem with an FAA project seeking to measure and quantify the impact of audits on repair stations and will submit the results to the FAA for comparison and validation with the agency’s own research on the issue.
