Garmin has joined the competition for AHRS-equipped portable ADS-B receivers with the new GDL 39 3D, priced at $849 or (with an optional battery) $899. Unlike other portable ADS-B receivers with built-in attitude and heading reference systems (AHRS), the GDL 39 3D works only with Garmin’s Pilot iPad and Android apps and most Garmin portable GPS receivers. When the GDL 39 3D is paired with the latest version of Garmin Pilot, users can view not only datalinked traffic and weather but also an AHRS-driven attitude indicator. The GDL 39 3D also contains a Waas-capable GPS receiver.
Radenna is taking orders for its newest dual-band ADS-B receiver, which also contains attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) sensors. The new SkyRadar DX retails for $899, but Radenna is selling the first 50 for $649. Deliveries begin on March 20. The SkyRadar-DX works on both ADS-B in frequencies, 1090 and 978 MHz, so it can receive traffic information from both bands and free weather information on 978 MHz.
The new MD 302 standby attitude module (SAM) developed by Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics offers avionics installers another option for standby instruments, especially in panels with little extra space. The MD302 is entirely self-contained and provides attitude, altitude, airspeed and slip information in a small package measuring just two inches by five inches and weighing 1.6 pounds.
Hilton Software (Booth No. 3064) has added key new features to its WingX Pro 7 iPad moving-map software, including integration with the X-Plane flight simulator and a terrain and obstacle ground proximity warning system (GPWS) that includes a terrain profile. The GPWS also provides a look-ahead function to warn pilots of impending impact with terrain or obstacles.

West Star Aviation recently installed dual Waas-capable Universal UNS-1Ew flight management systems in a Learjet 60. The upgrade also included an L-3 Avionics GH-3100 solid-state standby altitude/airspeed and vertical speed indicator, dual Rockwell Collins RTU-4220 radio tuning units, Universal MFD-890 display with ASU (application file server) and a WSI weather datalink system.
Sandel Avionics has received FAA approval for a new reversionary attitude mode for two of its electronic primary navigation displays, allowing aircraft pitch-and-roll symbology to be presented on the nav display in the event of primary attitude indicator failure. The feature is available now for the company’s SN3500 (3ATI) and SN4500 (4ATI) high-resolution, LED backlighted navigation displays.
Aspen Avionics announced an expanded roster of airplanes approved for installation of its EFD1000 Evolution PFD, now available for more than 600 makes and models of GA airplanes weighing up to 6,000 pounds. Higher-gross-weight airplanes will be added to the list by year-end, the company said. The Aspen PFD replaces the attitude indicator and directional gyro in typical instrument panels and costs $5,995 to $12,995, depending on the version.
Avidyne last month introduced the Entegra PFD4000, an eight-inch primary flight display system intended to compete with Garmin’s G600 retrofit display product.
Following the 1998 crash of a Swissair MD-11 off Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has issued an aviation safety advisory concerning the location, size and power sources of standby flight instruments. However, the TSB is emphasizing that no evidence suggests these caused the accident.
