Two police officers in Atlanta, Ga., were killed November 3 when their Hughes OH-6A helicopter struck wires near the top of a 42-foot power pole and crashed. A post-crash fire destroyed the fuselage and cabin. The helicopter had departed Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in support of a local search for a missing girl in night visual conditions about 20 minutes before the accident.

Facing 100 percent hangar occupancy at Atlanta’s Cobb County Airport/McCollum Field, the Atlanta Executive Jet Center (AEJC) has completed its Corporate Row Hangar Project, a $7 million development. Occupying a six-acre plot leased by the AEJC in 2010, it consists of 100,000 sq ft of corporate hangar space along with 240,000 sq ft of new ramp at the airport, which averages 183 movements a day. The new complex is expected to generate $9 million a year for the local community.

In just a few days, NBAA’s 63rd Annual Meeting and Convention opens at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. The show kicks off Tuesday morning with the opening general session, featuring Georgia governor and pilot Sonny Perdue, U.S. Chamber of Commerce president Tom Donahue, FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, TSA administrator John Pistole and Cox Communications CEO Jimmy Hayes.

NBAA is still looking for volunteers to help with the community build project before its convention in Atlanta this month. Among the tasks scheduled for the Sunday, October 17 event (to be held at the Brookhaven Boys and Girls Club, located near DeKalb-Peachtree Airport) will be the construction of a playground, an outdoor classroom and a garden, as well as renovations to the club’s gymnasium, outdoor volleyball courts and teen center.

The widening and repaving project at Cobb County-McCollum Airport in Kennesaw, Ga., was completed early last month, and the runway is now 6,305 feet long and 100 feet wide. The shoulders and infield sections of the airport were also graded and additional drainage installed. For Atlanta-based flight departments and Atlanta-bound traffic, the Preferred Jet Center FBO at Cobb County offers an attractive alternative to closer-in Atlanta airports.

Tastefully Yours, a business aviation caterer headquartered in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, opened a kitchen at the city’s DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. The 1,026-sq-ft facility’s staff of seven includes four chefs, said company CEO Paula Kraft. The new Tastefully Yours is located in the Signature hangar and is managed by Kraft’s eldest daughter and company president Amanda Kraft.
