Jeppesen has released its FliteDeck Pro electronic flight bag (EFB) software for Microsoft Window 8 tablets, and Delta Air Lines is implementing FliteDeck Pro for 11,000 pilots on Microsoft Surface 2 tablets. FliteDeck Pro for Windows 8 offers worldwide navigation charts, including data-driven en route information and terminal charts, all of which are updated with “changes-only” content to facilitate faster updates. Unlike the current version of the iPad, the Surface tablet allows users to run two applications in split screens.
Pilots who want to practice using FltPlan’s new FltPlanGo moving-map and charts app can do so using Laminar Research’s X-Plane flight-simulator program. FltPlanGo running on Apple iPads can show simulated own-ship position, and pilots can fly X-Plane while using FltPlanGo just as they would in a real aircraft. “It’s important for pilots who don’t fly often or those who have been away from flying to practice workflows and procedures,” said Sarah Wilson, principal/director of new technologies at FltPlan.
Boeing has advised GEnx engine operators that it is revising the 787’s and the 747-8’s flight manuals to prohibit flight within 50 nm of thunderstorms that may contain ice crystals. Following Boeing’s recommendation, Japan Airlines immediately announced it would switch aircraft on two routes. From April to November, GEnx-powered aircraft suffered six engine-icing events, according to a GE statement. All aircraft landed at their planned destinations, said the engine maker, and none of the incidents involved in-flight shutdowns–only temporary thrust losses.
EmptyLegMarket has added two new capabilities to its online clearinghouse for charter flights with empty seats that are available to generate revenue. The first, an Apple iOS app that allows users to bid on a price for potential empty legs, went live in early August. The newest EmptyLegMarket feature is integration of its scheduling software with other charter scheduling systems.
Why all the growing interest in low-cost flight simulators?
Some announcements at this week’s Sun ‘n Fun show in Lakeland, Fla., for example, underscore wannabe and regular pilots’ fascination with these devices. Redbird Flight Simulations introduced its new low-cost Jay device, which, while it can’t be used to log time, promises to help pilots stay proficient. And Pilot Mall today unveiled the Advanced Panel, which is a modular instrument panel with flight and other controls that works with Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) software.
If you’re looking for an elegantly simple personal computer-based flight simulator and you just want to practice some fun flying, Ikarus USA’s aeroflyFS might fit the bill. Released last year, aeroflyFS draws from Ikarus USA’s background in developing flight sims for radio control modelers.
Learning to fly model airplanes often involves a lot of crashing and rebuilding, but by using a flight sim like aerofly5, newbie RC pilots can avoid all the distress and damage before launching a model into the sky.
West Star Aviation has completed the first installation of Rockwell Collins’ Skybox in a Gulfstream G550. The installation was completed at the company’s East Alton location and was delivered on time at the beginning of March. The new Skybox allows users to share movies, TV shows and music wirelessly and on demand through an onboard Apple iTunes library. West Star installed the Skybox AMSU-5100, which has the larger capacity of the two units offered.
Flight-support provider Universal Weather & Aviation added two new ways for its subscribers to access its flight-planning products, the company announced yesterday at the NBAA Schedulers & Dispatchers Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
GE expects the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to issue an airworthiness directive (AD) detailing inspection intervals for GEnx engines “within a day or two,” following the latest contained failure of a GEnx-2B in Shanghai, China.
