• Operations on the new fifth runway at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport began on February 20. Initially, the 12,467-ft Runway 18R/36L is open only at night, but from July it is scheduled to start being used for limited daytime operations until November 1, when it becomes fully operational around the clock. The runway is configured to allow aircraft to take off and land over less densely populated surrounding areas to reduce noise affects.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has shelved long-standing plans to build a new business aviation terminal on the east side of the Dutch gateway. According to an airport spokeswoman, the development has been postponed due to financial constraints but is expected to be resumed before the end of this year.

Martinair has become the first European airline to sign up for Pratt & Whitney’s innovative EcoPower engine washing system.

Claimed to bring fuel burn savings of up to 2 percent, the EcoPower system has been tested on Martinair’s fleet of PW4000 engines in May. P&W said it expects to be contracted to wash not only Martinair’s engines but also those of other airlines using Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.
