The start of construction for American Eurocopter’s new parts manufacturing facility in Columbus, Miss., was marked by an August 7 groundbreaking ceremony. Grand Prairie, Texas-based American Eurocopter revealed last October that it planned to build a major production and finishing facility at Golden Triangle Regional Airport near Columbus. The facility will focus on constructing helicopter components for the AS 350, EC 130 and AS 355.

With the arrival of its new CEO, American Eurocopter also revealed that it is expanding its “footprint” in the U.S. with the investment of $11.9 million in a new facility to be built at Golden Triangle Regional Airport near Columbus, Miss.

The facility will construct helicopter components for the AS 350, EC 130 and AS 355; customize helicopters for special missions; and perform final assembly of the AS 350.

American Eurocopter’s rotor blade repair shop recently completed work on its 10,000th blade, this one belonging to an Air Methods helicopter that flew in to Eurocopter’s Grand Prairie, Texas shop for maintenance.

None of the world’s major helicopter manufacturers stands to lose more than Eurocopter should the U.S. economy falter. The company is making large capital investments throughout the country to sustain its huge production, support, warehouse and training operations in Texas, Ohio and elsewhere. The last thing it wants is a recession wiping away sales already in its order book.

American Eurocopter has received an FAA aircraft production certificate to manufacture its U.S. Army UH-72A Lakota light utility helicopter and EC 145 commercial variant at the company’s plant in Columbus, Miss. The first helicopter produced under the certificate was delivered to the Army on August 27.

Eurocopter logged orders for 114 civil and military helicopters worth E1.2 billion at this year’s Paris Air Show and says it is on track to sell 700 helicopters this year. This summer the company also logged more orders from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which bought eight additional American Eurocopter AS 350B3 AStars in July.

During a Sunday morning press conference here at Heli-Expo, Eurocopter president Fabrice Bregier quietly announced a pending agreement with China to codevelop a new helicopter. Called the EC 175, the new 22,000-pound-gross-weight helicopter will be positioned between the EC 155 and the Super Puma to compete in the heavy-lift market.

American Eurocopter opened its manufacturing, assembly and customization plant in Columbus, Miss., in October. The 85,500-sq-ft plant at Golden Triangle Regional Airport will employ a staff of 100 including technicians, manufacturing and support personnel.
